It became known when the PlayStation 5 will be able to expand the SSD

Published

on

Considering the bloated size of games like Call of Duty or Cyberpunk 2077 (only they need 250GB), the PlayStation 5’s internal 825GB SSD, of which only 667GB is available to the user, seems rather small. According to new data, in the not so distant future it will be possible to add a second SSD to the empty M.2 expansion slot of the PS5 console. According to a source citing a Bloomberg post, this will happen in the summer of 2021.

This feature will become available after updating the firmware. This update will also unlock faster cooling fan speeds to prevent overheating - this may vary depending on the game. After the upgrade, it will be enough to remove the plastic cover to gain access to the slot and install the drive to increase the storage capacity. The console is compatible with SSDs equipped with a PCIe 4.0 interface, but the manufacturer has not yet specified which drives will be supported.

Recall that you can already connect external drives to the USB port, but they only work with old PS4 games.
