Perseverance sent the first panorama of Mars in huge resolution and 5600 photos

The Perseverance rover has sent the first high-resolution panorama of the Red Planet to Earth, which was made using the Mastcam-Z instrument.

Mastcam-Z is a dual-camera system with a zoom function that allows cameras to zoom in, focus and capture high-definition video, as well as panoramic color and 3D images of the surface of Mars. Thanks to this feature, the rover can examine in detail both close and distant objects.

The cameras will help scientists assess the geological history and atmospheric conditions of Jezero Crater, as well as help identify rocks and sediments worthy of closer attention with other rover instruments. The cameras will also help the mission team determine what rocks the rover should select and collect for a possible return to Earth in the future.

The above panorama, composed of 142 images, shows the rim of the crater and cliff. The camera system can display details ranging in size from 3 to 5 millimeters near the rover and 2 to 3 meters on the distant slopes along the horizon.

A key goal of the Perseverance mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the geology of the planet and the climate, it should pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and will be the first mission to collect and store Martian rocks and regolith (broken stones and dust).

Subsequent NASA missions, in collaboration with ESA (European Space Agency), will send a spacecraft to Mars to collect these sealed samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.
