Mouse in mouth: MouthPad lets you control your smartphone or computer using your tongue
Augmental, a subsidiary of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), introduced an unusual device called the MouthPad. It will allow you to control your smartphone or computer using tongue movements and will be located directly in the owner’s mouth. This is a kind of analog of a computer mouse, only the hands will not be useful for its use: it will work by determining the position and level of pressure of the user’s tongue. It is this data that artificial intelligence converts into commands for an electronic device connected via Bluetooth (smartphone, laptop, etc.). According to the creators, MouthPad will allow the owner to send and receive emails, play video games and do almost everything that a regular computer mouse allows.

The MouthPad is housed in a 3D-printed waterproof dental resin casing that houses the processor, battery, Bluetooth wireless module, and a flexible circuit board with built-in pressure sensors. Each device will be custom-made for a specific user using a 3D scan of the inside of their mouth. The MouthPad is intended to be placed in contact with the upper teeth and palate. The device weighs about 7.5 grams, and its thickness does not exceed 0.7 mm; the manufacturer promises that the speech clarity of the MouthPad owner will not be affected in any way.

The model is compatible with iOS, Android, Windows, Mac OS and Linux operating systems. It is stated that one two-hour battery charge is enough for more than five hours of using such a “mouse”. The company notes that the MouthPad is primarily designed for people with disabilities (who cannot control electronics with their hands). But it can also be useful for those who are going to achieve maximum multitasking, managing the computer without the help of hands, and leaving them free for other things. It is not yet reported when the MouthPad will go on sale and how much it will cost. For potential buyers, a waiting list is available on the company’s website.

AMD has unveiled Ryzen Z1 APUs specifically for portable game consoles. It is these APUs that will underlie the Asus ROG Ally, but now it is clear that not only in it.

So, in total AMD introduced two models: Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme. They differ very much, and the performance of set-top boxes based on them will also differ greatly.

The Ryzen Z1 is configured with six Zen 4 processor cores and an RDNA 3 iGPU with 4 CUs, i.e. 256 stream processors. Although this is the latest architecture, there are very few blocks themselves. For example, the Steam Deck uses an APU with 512 p.p., albeit based on RDNA 2.


But the Ryzen Z1 Extreme is much more interesting. There are already eight processor cores and a top-end iGPU with 768 stream processors. Unfortunately, AMD doesn’t list clocks, but does list TDP: 15-30W. However, there is also data on manufacturers both directly in games and in the form of TFLOPS. The Ryzen Z1 delivers 2.8 TFLOPS, while the Ryzen Z1 Extreme hits an impressive 8.6 TFLOPS! For comparison, the PlayStation 5 has 10.3 TFLOPS.
From the rest, support for USB4 and LPDDR5X memory can be noted. The first console based on Ryzen Z1 will be Asus ROG Ally.

The Chinese brand Thunderobot introduced a very small computer to the home market: the body volume of the device with the laconic name Mix is only 0.533 liters, and the weight is 480 grams. Not surprisingly, the advertising picture shows an image of a can of Coca-Cola - they have almost the same volume.

At the same time, the “stuffing” here is no worse than that of other “larger displacement” mini-computers. The processor is a 12-core Intel Core i5-13500H, there are two slots for SO-DIMM memory (maximum RAM is 64 GB) and one for an M.2 drive. There is also an integrated Intel AX211 module that implements Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 communication. Cooling system - with a low-noise fan, heatsink and copper heat pipe.
Dimensions Thunderobot Mix - 120 x 120 x 37 mm. The device is offered in China either preconfigured (with 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and Windows 11 pre-installed) for $435, or as a self-assembly kit, which is cheaper.

Overclocking banned? The reason for the mass extinction of Ryzen 7000 processors has been identified - it applies to all motherboards and all CPUs, both regular and Ryzen 7000X3D
In recent weeks, there has been a lot of evidence of the failure of the Ryzen 7000X3D processors - they burn and take with them to the next world, at best, the motherboard socket, at worst, the board itself. Now there is a fairly detailed explanation why this happens and what to do to protect your computer from failure, which, moreover, is not covered by the warranty. It is important to note that the data is collected from several sources - including a source within AMD itself. However, people wished to remain anonymous.

The first point to consider is that the Ryzen 7000X3D line of processors mostly burns, but the same can happen with regular Ryzen 7000 processors. It’s just that the Ryzen 7000X3D cache is more sensitive to increased voltage.
The second point is that the problem affects absolutely any motherboard from any manufacturer. Asus motherboards often appeared in incidents, but there were cases of burnout of motherboard sockets from other manufacturers - Biostar, MSI, Gigabyte and ASRock.
So, what is the reason for such a “bright” death of AMD processors? The charges against the motherboard VRM zone are cleared - it does its job as expected. The problem is related to the SoC voltage changing to an unsafe level, which can occur both when manually adjusting the voltage (when overclocking), and when setting pre-programmed voltages when EXPO memory overclocking profiles are activated. And this is a very important point: if few users deal with manual overclocking settings, then with memory profiles everything is much simpler - I chose it in the BIOS, and then it somehow works on its own. If you do not check the voltage parameters after activating the EXPO profile, trouble can happen.

And now the CPU damage mechanism. The fact is that even at high voltage (within reason, of course) nothing should burn, since the CPU has thermal protection, upon activation of which the processor turns off. The point is that the high voltage set when the EXPO profile is activated, first of all, kills the processor’s thermal sensors and, in fact, deprives the chip of protection against overheating. As a result, the CPU starts working at an abnormal temperature for it, without realizing it.
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that modern AMD CPUs were originally designed to operate at high temperatures. Let’s say 95 ° C for them is quite normal. Accordingly, they have a very small delta from normal to critical temperature. For the user, this looks like a sudden death of the CPU: everything just worked, and now it doesn’t.
Getting power above the safe level of the thermal package leads to fatal overheating, the result of which can be seen both on the processor itself and on the motherboard socket (and sometimes in the PCB layers). The cascade of events can be called a “spiral of death”, and its mark is a characteristic darkening of contacts, which is most often fixed on the contact pad of the processor in the X3D memory area. There are vCore contacts in this area - these are visible damages. But there are also invisible (or less visible), they affect the CPU SOC, CPU_VDDCR_SOC and CPU VDD MSIC pins.

It is known that the recommended safe voltage for the CPU is 1.25 V, so irreversible damage to the processor occurs at a voltage of 1.4 V and higher. It is not a fact, of course, that the CPU will burn out at this voltage, but the likelihood of this increases significantly.
Sources say that AMD is preparing a patch that will limit or block overvoltage in the firmware - this should prevent the EXPO memory profiles from exceeding the as-yet undefined voltage limit. And with simple manipulations with the BIOS, users will also not be able to overestimate the voltage to a level at which the CPU will fail. MSI and Asus did not wait for a centralized solution from AMD and released new BIOS versions containing voltage and overclocking restrictions themselves.
For users, it is important to understand that any damage from using the EXPO overclocking profile (as well as any other case of overclocking) is not covered by the warranty! Thus, in almost any case of damage to the CPU as part of the above cascade of actions (recall that characteristic marks remain on both the CPU and the socket), the manufacturer of at least the motherboard may refuse to refund the purchase amount or replace the motherboard with a new one.
