Analysts at Morgan Stanley have calculated how much revenue will be at risk for Foxconn if its Zhengzhou production, which has been halted due to the coronavirus outbreak, is unable to ship iPhones before the end of the year.
Analysts consider such a scenario unlikely, but it will lead to a 20% reduction in expected sales in the current quarter. It will also result in a 36% drop in iPhone revenue.
Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, Apple’s key device assembly partner, has struggled to contain the Covid-19 outbreak at its Zhengzhou facilities. Some of the plant’s 200,000 employees were able to leave before the plant closed, while others were forced to maintain strict on-site quarantines.
A mass exodus of workers disrupted the world’s largest iPhone factory at a crucial moment before the holidays, and Foxconn prepared to launch back-up production and increase hourly wages by more than a third to attract more workers. The main threat to the recovery now could be the extension of the lockdown, which expires on November 9, or the introduction of other drastic measures that could slow or stop assembly lines.
If Foxconn can restore its production and bring the Covid situation under control, sales will still fall in the first half of November, but will recover at the end of the month and in December, analysts at Citi said.
According to Counterpoint Senior Analyst Ivan Lam, Zhengzhou facilities account for more than 85% of production capacity for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max devices.
First high-quality renders of the iPhone 15 Pro show a possible new smartphone design
Following rumors and insider information that the iPhone 15 Pro will get a new case design, the Chinese edition of Mydrivers has published realistic renderings that show what the upcoming flagship could look like.
Earlier, an insider ShrimpApplePro, who leaked live photos of the iPhone 14 long before the announcement, said that the next Apple smartphone will receive an updated case and a back cover in the style of the iPhone 5c. According to him, the iPhone 15 will offer buyers a titanium case. In addition, instead of flat square edges, the smartphone will receive a rounded back panel.
Apple has been using flat surfaces and sharp edges for three years in a row, starting with the iPhone 12. Many manufacturers of Android smartphones have followed suit, but there are people who complain about this shape and claim that it is uncomfortable to hold the smartphone for a long time.
In addition, according to multiple sources, the iPhone 15 will also say goodbye to the Lightning interface and move to USB-C, although some believe that Lightning may remain on lower models. Even if all models get USB-C, only older models will have a fast connector.
The smartphone is also credited with a completely new image sensor and improved photo and video capabilities.
Apple in trouble? iPhone 14 production could fall by 16 million this year
According to analysts at the largest Swiss bank UBS, this year the production of the iPhone 14 may be reduced by an impressive 16 million units. This is facilitated by covid restrictions in China, as well as low demand for entry-level models – the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.
Initially, analysts believed that the total production of the iPhone 14 this year will be 92 million units, but now it has been reduced to 76 million, which is 20% less than the iPhone 13 was produced last year.
“It is important to monitor how the increase in iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max waiting time affects demand,” UBS analysts wrote. “The speed at which Apple and Hon Hai [Foxconn] can solve problems in Zhengzhou, is the key to sales in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023‘, they added.
The iPhone Pro production problems could put further pressure on Apple’s business, analysts say, as the more expensive iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offset low demand for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Ironically, Zhengzhou, where the Foxconn plant that makes the vast majority of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, has been hit hardest by the COVID-19 restrictions. Obviously, such a significant decline in the production of the most popular Apple phones can negatively affect the company’s financial report for the fourth quarter of this year and for the entire year as a whole.
