Recently in Spain a woman was sentenced to prison for using pirated versions of Windows and Office. According to the information released to the public, the convict used pirated Microsoft software on two computers in her office.

The first court decision on this was made back in 2017. Since that moment, the woman has twice tried to appeal against the court decision, but she never managed to escape punishment for this crime.

As a result, the Spanish Supreme Court sentenced the woman to six years in prison. In addition, she will have to pay a € 3,600 fine. In addition to this amount, she will have to pay Microsoft for licensed copies of Windows and Office.

This is the first time a country has been sentenced so severely for the use of pirated software. The Spanish Supreme Court relied on a reform of the country’s Criminal Code that was carried out in 2015. Since then, in Spain, the commercial use of unlicensed products and services has been considered a criminal offense.
