Will Samsung Save Huawei? Korean company may start producing processors for Chinese
Since last fall, Huawei has been deprived of the ability to produce single-chip systems for its mobile devices – US sanctions do not allow it to be done on equipment with American technologies, and this is installed in all contract manufacturers. So far, there is no hint that the US government will lift its absurd ban, but according to rumors, Samsung may become the new SoC manufacturer for Huawei – instead of TSMC.
How this will be implemented is anyone’s guess. In theory, Samsung could ask the US administration for permission to manufacture SoCs for Huawei – and they could. After all, Microsoft and Intel were eventually allowed to work with Huawei, and last year. Whether Samsung will be able to get approval for the production of single-chip systems is still a question, but if it does, it will become the real savior of Huawei’s mobile division: the stock of Kirin and MediaTke SoCs created last year for smartphones and tablets is already coming to an end.
Meanwhile, the Korean company is credited with the release of the 5nm Kirin 9000L SoC, the third version of the flagship Kirin 9000 SoC. instead of the 24-core GPU Mali-G78, an 18-core one will be used. Of course, such a platform is not allowed for top-end models like the Huawei P50, but it can be used in mid-range smartphones.
