WhatsApp has added disappearing photos and videos, but this feature should only be used with trusted contacts

Earlier this month, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart confirmed that WhatsApp will soon allow users to send disappearing images.

A new option for disappearing multimedia messages allows users to send photos or videos that will be removed after they have been opened. The function deletes the media file immediately after viewing it.

To try out the function, you need to do the following:

  • Open WhatsApp and select the contact you want to send the disappearing media to
  • Select an image or video from your gallery or take a photo with the camera in WhatsApp
  • Once selected, click on the small circle between the text input field and the submit button

Unlike Snapchat, WhatsApp does not prevent users from taking screenshots, so it should only be used with trusted contacts. In addition, the sender can see when the file was viewed, even if you turned off WhatsApp read receipts. Finally, the feature will work even if the recipient hasn’t updated WhatsApp to the latest version.

WhatsApp is currently allowing users to try out the feature for Android users in beta
