What would cars be like without women? Ford Explorer Men’s Only Edition introduced without wipers, heater, turn signals and other parts

Ford has jokingly unveiled its first male-only car, dubbed the Ford Explorer Men’s Only Edition.

The SUV does not have windshield wipers, a heater, turn signals and a rear-view mirror in the cabin, as well as many other familiar features. This is not because Ford thinks men don’t need them, but because they wouldn’t exist if women didn’t invent them.

This promotional video was released in honor of March 8th. It says the car is not for sale. The company has also created a website that highlights the many women who have developed various technologies.

Among them are actresses Hedy Lamarr, who developed the communications system that helped create the basis for cellular, Wi-Fi, and GPS technologies, and Florence Lawrence, who developed the first stop and turn signals. Gladys West, a satellite mathematician, also contributed to the development of the GPS system, which today enables the use of car navigation systems.

Dorothy Levitt is credited as the inventor of the rear-view mirror: she was the first to use a hand-held mirror to see cars from behind during a race, and wrote that female drivers should keep them close at hand, which led to their inclusion in stock cars in 1914.

The website also lists Dorothy Pullinger, who ran Galloway Motors, which designed a car designed for women with a rear-view mirror, a smaller steering wheel, and raised seats for easier access.

Mary Anderson, an Alabama real estate and farming entrepreneur, was responsible for creating the windshield wiper.

Volkswagen is phasing out the highly popular Volkswagen Passat sedan in Europe. A car in such a body will no longer be produced and sold in Europe.

The company has clarified that the next-generation Volkswagen Passat model (pictured), which will debut in the coming weeks or months, will be sold exclusively as a station wagon. Company chief Thomas Schäfer told Automotive News Europe that the decision to ditch the good old sedan was made despite the fact that it was the best-selling car in its segment in Europe last year. In the United States, the Passat has been discontinued after the 2022 model year.

The head of Volkswagen said that deliveries of the new Volkswagen Passat 2024 station wagon should begin in September, which means that the official announcement will take place this summer or even earlier. The midsize car will no longer be built in Emden (Germany) as production is moved to Bratislava (Slovakia). At the same time, it is worth noting that the production of the previous generation sedan ended in January 2022, as we reported.

The assembly of the sister model Skoda Superb will be moved from Kvasin (Czech Republic) to the same plant in Bratislava. The next Superb will be offered in both liftback and wagon body styles.
