What do Magic Leap’s new AR headset and PlayStation 5 have in common? The former will also receive a semi-custom AMD platform

A few years ago, many analysts predicted a great future for Magic Leap, and their augmented reality headset was called extremely revolutionary.

Perhaps it was and will be so, but at one time the company refused to move towards the consumer segment, focusing on the corporate one, and there were also rumors that the US Army could buy 100,000 Magic Leap headsets.

Apparently, having gone through a restructuring process last year, Magic Leap is now preparing to rush into the fray again with AMD’s backing. The companies will work on the next device of the augmented reality segment aimed at the corporate market, and AMD in this case will be responsible for the creation of a semi-custom SoC. That is, we are talking about some kind of APU with characteristics that are different from conventional consumer products. For example, such solutions are at the heart of Sony and Microsoft consoles of both current and past generations.

Magic Leap notes that it needs a solution with low power consumption and a new level of graphics performance. The first version of the headset, recall, was based on the Nvidia Tegra X2 SoC with a Pascal generation GPU with 256 CUDA cores.
