The Swedish auto giant Volvo recently launched the XC40 Recharge P8, its first electric vehicle. And now he is preparing a second electric model called the Volvo XC20. It can be based on a platform developed by the Chinese company Geely.

The fact that Volvo will adopt the new electric architecture Geely SEA, in an interview with Auto Express, said the president and CEO of the Swedish automaker Hakan Samuelsson (Hakan Samuelsson). It will be used for a compact car and, according to the head of Volvo, is a practical and smart solution that will avoid high production costs.

The Volvo executive said the Geely SEA model will be premium and fully electric. He did not rule out that it will be a crossover, noting that in the future crossovers will not be the same as they are now. Even today, according to him, ground clearance and permeability are already fading into the background.

Although Håkan Samuelsson did not name the exact model that will receive the “Chinese” architecture, there is no doubt that we are talking about the Volvo XC20. The crossover, which will join the electric Volvo XC40, will hit the market by 2022.

Recall that the Geely SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform designed specifically for electric vehicles was presented at the end of September. It took the Chinese carmaker four years and 18 billion yuan (about $ 2.6 billion) to develop it. In addition to Volvo, eight other brands are interested in the new architecture, including Smart and Lynk & Co. Geely is also negotiating other brands. The SEA platform debuted in Lynk & Co’s Zero Concept electric hatchback prototype, which will go into series production early next year.
