The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), expressing concern over driver distraction accidents, said it is in discussions with Tesla to update its electric vehicle software that allows users to play video games on a touchscreen mounted in front of the dashboard.
Tesla has added the games to a software update that was downloaded to most EVs this summer.
“Distraction accidents are a cause for concern, especially in vehicles equipped with many convenient technologies such as entertainment screens. We are aware of the driver’s problems and are discussing this feature with the manufacturer, ”the source quoted the NHTSA statement.
NHTSA has reported that driver distraction is the cause of a significant number of road deaths in the United States.
By adding games, Tesla warned users that “driving while playing is for passengers only.” However, the driver can play by simply pressing a button to pretend that the passenger is about to play.
The Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup truck will have a “little brother” in miniature form
While Elon Musk and Tesla continue to push back the start of production of the Cybertruck electric pickup truck to ever later dates, information has appeared on the network about the possible release of another version of this car.
Initially, the rather well-known Indian analyst Trip Chowdhry from Global Equities Research, who specializes, among other things, in Tesla, shared the information.
According to the source, Tesla will present two versions of the Cybertruck at a special event in March 2022.
Moreover, Chaudhry notes that both versions will receive “significant changes” compared to the Cybertruck originally shown. Chaudhry did not go into details of the changes, but noted that the second version of the Cybertruck will be about 15-20 percent smaller than the first. The bodies of both cars will reportedly be built by the same Texas-based Steel Dynamics company, which operates about 100 miles from Tesla’s Texas plant.
Chaudhry expects to hear the first official news on the matter on January 26, when Tesla will report earnings to investors.
Recall that in November 2019, Elon Musk himself said that in the long run it makes sense to add a more miniature Cybertruck to the lineup. Since then, however, he has not further developed the idea publicly.
BP says EV charging stations will soon be more profitable than gas stations
Oil giant British Petroleum (BP) says its electric vehicle charging stations are “on the verge” of becoming more profitable than gas stations for combustion engines. The moment this happens could be a turning point for electric vehicles and “big oil,” the source said.
The electric vehicle charging business has been unprofitable from the start for oil companies such as Shell and BP, which are forced to embrace the electric future. That may change soon, however, as BP’s latest data show that, on a margin-adjusted basis, its UK network of BP pulse fast battery chargers is approaching the profitability of petrol stations. And by 2025, the division could become profitable on its own.
“If I think about a tank of fuel versus fast charging, we’re getting closer to a place where fast-charging business fundamentals are better than (fossil) fuels,” said Emma Delaney, Head of Customers and Products at BP .
No date has been given for when, according to BP’s calculations, the profit from charging electric vehicles will exceed the profit from the sale of fossil fuels. However, the company said its sales of electricity for charging electric vehicles grew by 45% between the second and third quarters of 2021 alone.
“Overall, we see a huge opportunity in fast charging for consumers and businesses, and for fleets in general,” Delaney explained. “That’s where we see growth and where we see profits.”
The London-based company plans to expand its electric vehicle charging business from its current 11,000 stations to 70,000 by 2030.
Kia EV6: the intelligent electric crossover with almost 500 km
If there is a car that has been taking much of the prominence since its launch, it is the Kia EV6, a 100% electric, high performance, futuristic design, novel concept and autonomies that range between 370 and 475 kilometers. This is the great asset of the brand towards the present and future of sustainable mobility. We know your data sheet.
Kia has been attracting attention for several years, but it has been with its EV6 that it has been able to Make a Difference between your present and the future. We are talking about a brand that has already become strong within electrified mobility, as is the case in the same category with Hyundai cars.
So much so that the two brands (belonging to the same group) have caused a very own impression, achieving milestones that until a couple of years ago were unthinkable. And so, after the e-Niro, Soul, or the rest of hybrid technology, the South Korean brand hit the market in 2021 with a special model: the EV6.
Broadly speaking, it can be seen that it is a different car and of which could be framed more in the models based on prototypes. In any case, its reality tells us that it can compete directly with the largest in its range, especially considering that it is provided with different versions.
Inspired by the Kia Imagine concept, it is a crossover which presents a original silhouette and unprecedented aesthetic DNA, while its nomenclature represents the position of the at an intermediate level. This is because the Korean brand intends to launch from an EV1 to an EV8. Sharing a platform directly with its ‘brand friend’ Hyundai, it represents the launch of a roadmap for the future. Highly efficient, it is shown with powers ranging from 168 kW (229 CV) to 430 kW (585 CV). It has as direct rivals the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or the Skoda Enyaq iV.
- Type: 100% electric
- Year of production: 2021
- Price: €46,000
- Capacity: 5 seats
- Power: 168-436kw
- Autonomy: 434km
- Acceleration: 7.3 seconds/100km/h
Kia wanted to develop an electric vehicle that would not be compromised by the current limitations that this type of vehicle drags: they wanted a vehicle with great autonomy, that could be recharged very quickly and, at the same time, had an interior spacious, technological and tasteful, without being able to blame a boring driving. But above all he wanted to stand out from the rest aesthetically.
And he has succeeded. Thus, we can say that this model, while conforming to very outstanding technical characteristics, stands out for its image stunning view from all angles and spaces (also inside). Created to offer something different in the crossover class, it offers a distinctive high-tech exterior.
We see it on the front with its so-called ‘Tiger Face’ which, in conjunction with the manufacturer’s new achievement, has been reinterpreted for the digital age. As part of this, the daytime running lights show a elegant and modern look including a sequential dynamic light pattern. In the lower area, a low air intake visually enlarges the front of the car, accentuating its high-tech image. It has a size of 4.6 meters long, 1.8 meters wide and 1.5 meters high.
Something very representative of how this car is is that the brand wanted to launch it directly with four different versions with different power levels from its first day. It does so from a series of configurations ranging from the lowest prices (46,000 euros) to the most equipped (66,000).
The basic models 126 kW (170 hp), 168 kW (239 hp) and 242 kW (325 hp). They have a single electric motor. While the last one, the 436 kW (585 hp) does so by integrating two electric motors. The recharging system mounts an integrated charger as standard that supports recharging power in alternating current of up to 10.5 kW of power. Models with the 58 kW battery support direct current fast charging of up to 180 kW of power at 400 volts.
Engine and batteries
Getting fully into its mechanical range, this is absent from thermal versions. At the moment two sets of batteries have been announced, and the entire mechanical range will rotate on them. The access one offers a capacity of 58 kWh, while the superior one increases the capacity to 77.4 kWh. The recharging capacity is up to 350 kW.
The range starts with the EV6 with 58 kWh battery, 126 kW (equivalent to 170 horsepower), 350 Nm of torque, rear-wheel drive and 400 kilometers of approved autonomy. It is followed by the unit with a 77.4 kWh battery, 170 kW (228 horsepower), 350 Nm of torque, rear-wheel drive and 475 kilometers of approved autonomy.
From there the versions of all-wheel drive with double motor (one on each axis). The first is the EV6 with a 58 kWh battery, 235 horsepower and 605 Nm of torque. The most powerful versions are signed with the largest battery, the 77.4 kWh. In a first step it offers 325 horses, 605 Nm of torque and all-wheel drive.
The GT Line comes with two electric motors that generate a maximum power of 436 kW (585 hp) with a torque of up to 740 Nm. Thanks to these recharging powers, the Kia EV6 can recover up to 80% autonomy in just 15 minutes, while domestic recharges take between six and eight hours, depending on the size of the battery.
For the consumption of this Kia EV6 we have to say that they are not too far from other models in the same range, such as its cousin Ioniq 5, from Hyundai. With 16.5kWh/100km, these are acceptable numbers if we take into account that its batteries are among the highest in the range, something important if we consider that its consumption has achieved a range in electric mode of almost 500 kilometers.
In any case, the brand says that it is possible lower him from the low 16, even up to 16 kWh/100 km. Yes indeed; It should be noted that this (and regardless of the car) will be possible with a smoother drive and on terrain that is not too difficult. And it is that despite the fact that it is not a heavy weight to be 100% electric, it does it in approximately two tons.
On a list, we can say that it is placed in the middle of several of its direct rivals, but quite far from Skoda’s Enyaq IV, one of its closest rivals, which does so with 15.1 kWh.
Interior and finishes
And if you liked the exterior, wait until you find out what its interior is like. Breathing quality in all its forms, we are talking about a car that is quite large and habitable if we compare it with others in the same segment. We do it from a wide comfort in which both the driver and passengers will enjoy great comfort.
This is directed from a somewhat elevated driving position that allows us to see the shapes of the hood, with seats created from recycled plastics equivalent to 111 bottles of water and whose design wins whole. As we will see in more detail in its equipment, Kia has chosen to introduce two 12.3-inch screens.
These are the ones that perform the functions of instrument cluster and infotainment system, with very good presence and slightly oriented towards the driver. The physical buttons are still present, although most functions are controlled from the quick-response touch keys. These screens are where the information on consumption or autonomy is represented. In addition, the graphics change design depending on the chosen driving mode. It is also intuitive.
The Kia EV6 has some very modern technology inside, with a format double screen panoramic for the multimedia system and the instrument panel. All versions of the Kia EV6 have Apple Car Play and Android Auto. We initially see it with the standard layout through the interior lighting system, which is designed to transmit different information to the driver. From there we have different equipment.
The first, that of access version, is referred to as EV6, where it consists of a good amount of technology. Among them, its level of driving assistance, in which it has a lane keeping assistance system, a speed limit recognition system, a fatigue detector or road lights assistants, a front braking assistance system or adaptive cruise control with Stop&go.
To everything seen so far we will add the instrumentation panel to the interior 12.3″ on-screen monitoring, same size used for UVO Connect multimedia with parking assist camera, Android Auto / Apple Carplay, and Kia connectivity services, leather upholstery, power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control and wireless charger
The next level within the Kia EV6 range is marked by the GT-Line that we have seen Its endowment is made up of everything that the first EV6 finish had plus what was added by the ‘Comfort Pack’, and other elements such as 20-inch wheels, sports pedals, GT-Line upholstery, heated front and rear seats (the front ones also they are also ventilated) and the heated steering wheel. The most ‘premium’ would enter the extras.
For its part, and whenever the driver wishes, we can opt for a series of extras that seem perfect to complete our electrified vehicle, although the different trim levels They gave a very well defined and fulfilled set.
Therefore, with Kia’s EV6, aspects such as the digital dashboard can be complemented, this time a head-up display with augmented reality to interpret navigation signals and key vehicle data. There are augmented reality features, which will interact with an interior light strip to warn of hazards or help direct the driver. They are somewhat more ‘premium’ and exclusive samples that can occur in other models.
A key aspect is its maintenance. Although their technology is complicated, electric cars are simpler and have fewer parts than a car with a combustion engine, so its maintenance is completely different. We may not have to replace filters or oil, but their revision requires expensive diagnostic equipment that the workshops will have to amortize and that affects the bill.
According to Kia, in an electric car, maintenance mainly includes: brake pads, fluids, tires, windshield wiper blades, battery and cabin filter. In the case of the brake pads, they require approximately half the maintenance of a conventional car, especially thanks to the regenerative braking, which will wear them less.
There are three liquids: brakes, coolant and windshield wipers. The cabin filter in the case of the electric Kia EV6 must be replaced every 30,000 km or every two years.
There is another aspect that we will always have to watch. And it is the type of guarantee that manufacturers offer us, especially since an electric vehicle can suffer a setback with one of its main components. For this, enter a series of details. For example, and as we have seen before, for the modern crossover of the South Koreans, they present us with a guarantee on the batteries of 8 years or 160,000 km.
In that time, at least 70% of its capacity will be preserved. To assess, the so-called full guarantee Kia also covers manufacturing, painting and perforation defects. In the event of an incident (breakdown, paint defect, bodywork perforation), you can visit an official workshop with the maintenance and warranty manual.
Therefore, only an official technician can assess whether the defect can be repaired under the brand’s commercial guarantee. Currently, by law, it does so within a legal framework of 2 years. But in addition to these two years of warranty, Kia gives us the opportunity to extend the warranty with this Soul EV. This term, instead of two years would become 5, prior payment when we make the purchase of the car.
