US investment bans on Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu postponed
The Trump administration has stalled plans to blacklist Chinese tech giants Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu. Four people familiar with the matter told Reuters about it.
On the other hand, Washington plans to blacklist nine more Chinese companies this week. These are the latest attempts by Donald Trump, whose presidency is due to end on January 20, to consolidate the tough US stance on China.
Last month, the White House blacklisted China’s leading chip maker SMIC and oil giant CNOOC. Trump also unveiled an executive order in January banning U.S. transactions with eight Chinese apps, including Alipay Ant Group.
E-commerce giant Alibaba, search engine giant Baidu, and video game leader Tencent, which owns the messaging app WeChat, were among those the administration planned to add to the list next. The basis for inclusion in the list was the alleged connection with the Chinese military.
The plan was paused by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who is widely believed to have a softer stance on China.
The market reacted to the news by increasing the value of Tencent and Alibaba securities.
