Trump bans Intel and other companies from supplying their products to Huawei

The Trump administration has notified several Huawei suppliers, including chipmaker Intel, to revoke the Chinese company’s supply licenses. In addition, it intends to reject dozens of applications for permission to supply American products to a Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer.

This is Trump’s latest attempt to weaken the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer on the pretext that it poses a threat to national security and US foreign policy interests.

In an email that alerted Reuters to the administration’s actions, the Semiconductor Industry Association said that on Friday, the Commerce Department issued “an intent to reject a significant number of Huawei export requests and revoke at least one previously issued license.” Sources familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said more than one license had been revoked.

The email said the actions affected a “wide range” of semiconductor products and the industry was asked if they had received notifications. A spokesperson for the association has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment.

As a reminder, the United States blacklisted Huawei by the Department of Commerce in May 2019, barring US suppliers from selling Huawei goods and technology for reasons of national security. Several suppliers later obtained licenses to supply their products to Huawei. At the same time, the United States has tightened restrictions, requiring a license not only to sell American products, but also products made in other countries, but using American technology.
