Toyota showed a plant without a conveyor, which will dramatically reduce assembly costs

Toyota invited journalists to the Motomachi plant, which is the company’s largest and oldest enterprise. Engineers here are developing what they call a self-propelled assembly line.

The idea is that electric cars won’t fill factories with harmful fumes and endanger workers. At the same time, they will be able to independently control production as soon as they have an engine and a set of wheels. A simple remote control device connected to multiple surveillance cameras will guide each vehicle through the plant, eliminating the need for industrial conveyor belts.

Toyota says this will reduce initial plant investment and increase the flexibility of assembly lines when they need to be adjusted or a new model introduced. According to Hindustantimes, during the presentation, nine different models, including sedans, minivans, electric cars and police cars, were assembled on one mixed production line. Roller platforms with built-in tools allow each worker to quickly move from one machine to another.

This process has been developed over decades as part of the Toyota Production System doctrine, which emphasizes functionality and condemns waste, but above all strives for incremental improvement in any process to improve the final product.

Assembly-less production is intended to be primarily used in the assembly of new generation electric vehicles, which will occupy an increasingly prominent place in the Toyota Motor line-up. This should dramatically reduce the cost of assembling an electric vehicle and greatly reduce the time required for its production.

The global production network is up and running, affected factories are back online and production should proceed as planned. Individual systems may still be unstable during the transition phase. Volkswagen found no indication that external influences caused the failure.
