As usual, the new iPhones have divided people into two camps (but certainly left no one indifferent): someone sees progress in progress, and someone is again convinced of stomping on the ground and imposing minor technologies at an unreasonably high price. Be that as it may, the twelfth series of novelties has brought many innovations, some of them really innovative – no other manufacturer can boast of them. This article is just about such technologies and solutions.
Dolby Vision video shooting is like a professional movie camera
The iPhone 12 has become the world’s first smartphone to support Dolby Vision shooting – not even all movie cameras can. This is an advanced specification that provides video with precise color gradations, balanced and natural colors, increased detail and stunning contrast. According to Apple, previously the Dolby Vision standard could only be afforded by large film studios – it is widely used in post-processing of footage.
Thanks to the advanced Apple A14 Bionic processor, the new gadgets apply Dolby Vision dynamically to each frame right during the shooting process. In other words, what large film studios do on professional computers during post-processing is now available in a pocket gadget right at the time of recording. The only limitation – when shooting on iPhone 12 and 12 mini in 4K, the Dolby Vision standard is used only at 30 frames per second. On Pro-models with the same processor, the Dolby Vision standard is also available in 4K at 60 frames per second – “nothing personal, just business.”
“Ceramic glass” – the screen protects a special coating with the strength of ceramics and the transparency of the glass
The display of the new iPhone is covered with a completely new material with the marketing name Ceramic Shield, developed in partnership with Corning. It is created on the basis of glass to which ceramic nanocrystals are added. This idea seems simple, but only in words – in reality, these components are opaque. In order for them to transmit light no worse than glass, the engineers had to choose the right type of crystals and the degree of their crystallization.
Ceramic nanocrystals are stronger than many metals. According to Apple, the new coating is 4 times more resistant to damage from falls compared to the protective glass in the previous generation iPhone. And thanks to the advanced ion exchange Ceramic Shield is also scratch resistant.
LiDAR – augmented reality and portrait photography are now at a new level
iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max became the first smartphones equipped with a full-fledged lidar (previously it appeared in the iPad Pro). It is many times more accurate and efficient than standard solutions – both conventional cameras, called depth sensors, and infrared rangefinders. LiDAR projects many invisible infrared dots onto the surface, mapping a three-dimensional map of the depths of the world around it.
In fact, this technology is used not only for augmented reality (which, let’s be honest, is not very popular), but also helps to better separate the contours from the objects in portrait photography – including night. Thanks to her, the new Pro-models received a portrait mode of night shooting.
Smart 5G mode – high speed is activated only when needed, and it saves battery power
The novelties did not become the first smartphones equipped with 5G. But, as usual, Apple has approached the implementation of an existing feature. iOS 14 supports Smart Data mode, which tracks application needs and activates 5G only when it is really needed. This saves a lot of battery power, because 5G is the main enemy of today for mobile device batteries.
The widest 5G coverage – will work anywhere in the world
Another example of a competent implementation of 5G in the new iPhone – support for a large number of bands, which currently can not boast of any other smartphone in the world. In practice, this means that the owner of the “apple phone” will be able to use 5G in any country with fifth-generation cellular communications. Owners of other gadgets are so unlucky.

ProRAW is a new image format that preserves the results of computational photography
iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max have the opportunity to shoot in the new ProRAW format. Unlike regular RAW, which is widely used by photographers and stores all image information, ProRAW files also embed data on computational photography features such as HDR and Deep Fusion.
In other words, ProRAW not only stores the original data from the camera, but also information from the CPU, including the image, graphics accelerator, digital signal processor and neural core. All this allows you to edit photos without losing the benefits of computational photography technology. ProRAW will not appear immediately (but with some of the system updates) and in the future will be implemented in third-party graphics editors.
Uncompromising flagship in a miniature size – iPhone 12 mini is not inferior to the older model
Apple is almost the only company that produces real flagships of compact size. The new iPhone 12 mini is just one of them, because it has the same stuffing as the iPhone 12 (not Pro), but at the same time it is significantly smaller – having a 5.4 екра screen, it is even more compact than the miniature iPhone SE (2020), and the difference is noticeable .
