India, along with China, is one of the largest smartphone markets in the world. In recent years, it has been dominated by Chinese manufacturers, but local company Reliance Jio is set to fight back its Chinese counterparts and revolutionize it with an Android smartphone that will retail for around $ 50.
Reliance has asked local suppliers to increase manufacturing capacity in India to boost smartphone production to 200 million units over the next two years, according to the TimesofIndia. Sources close to the question argue that this will boost India’s technological ambitions and increase competition from big Chinese players like Xiaomi. The latter is the leader in the Indian smartphone market.
Reliance Jio is currently in talks with various domestic assemblers to create the highly affordable Jio Phone line, which will run Android and cost just INR 4,000 or $ 54.
It should be added that Jio is the leading telecom operator in the country of Southeast Asia, and is also actively working on the development of 5G networks.
