Astronomers analyze its shape

Although the planet was discovered in 2014, it was only recently that a team of astronomers examined the exoplanet transit light curve, or the way it blocks some of the star’s light as it passes in front of it from our perspective. The team conducted the study of the transiting light curves of WASP-103b using the satelite ExOplanet characterization (Cheops), a space telescope designed to study the structure of exoplanets. In turn, the team combined the collected data with data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope.

“It is incredible that Cheops was able to reveal this small deformation,” said study co-author Jacques Laskar, an astrophysicist at the Université Paris Sciences et Lettres, in the ESA statement. “This is the first time such an analysis has been performed, and we can hope that observation over a longer time interval will strengthen this observation and lead to a better understanding of the internal structure of the planet.”

After the study, the team revealed that WASP-103b is close enough to its star that tidal forces are causing the deformation of the possible sphere that now becomes ovoid. In future observations of WASP-103b by the Webb Space Telescope recently released could lead to new findings. Webb is still on its way to its vantage point in space, as it has been successfully deployed this week.
