They are treated like second class people. Apple secretly cuts thousands of freelancers
According to the Apple Insider portal, Apple began to cut freelancers without advertising it. Recall that massive waves of layoffs have swept companies in the past few months, but Apple, as previously reported, managed to avoid significant cuts.
Now Apple is making adjustments and downsizing by starting freelancers. They are not technically Apple employees, but often work alongside Apple employees on various projects. A typical employment contract needs to be renewed every 12-15 months. According to Nypost, Apple refused to renew contracts and began to cut the number of freelancers.
Apple does not disclose the number of contractors it works with, but there are reports that we are talking about thousands. The source writes about complaints from freelancers who say they are being treated like second-class citizens. They don’t have stock options or health insurance and usually don’t work at Apple Park headquarters.
Apple has been praised in the past for avoiding mass layoffs. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently went on record that the Cupertino-based company is very meticulous in its hiring and only hires employees in certain departments.
An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.

Google has launched a waiting list for access to the Bard chatbot, but so far only in two countries

Google has announced that it is opening up access to its AI-powered chatbot Bard. For now, it will be a limited edition that will be available in the UK and US. Residents of these countries can access the site bard.google.com and add yourself to the waiting list.
The neural network is based on the LaMDA language model, and early tests showed that the system needs to be improved. However, the company is still ready to launch full access to the chatbot.
According to the corporation, Bard works in much the same way as other chatbots. You can formulate requests to it yourself or use hints. However, there are also differences. While the Microsoft Bing chatbot supports citations, Bard doesn’t have source citations to check the accuracy of the answer. Instead, you can see other chatbot response options.
For now, Bard looks like something separate from the Google search engine, but this may change in the future.

“This is probably the most beautiful mobile phone in history.” The creators praise the design of Meizu 20 Pro, which is similar to the Samsung Galaxy S23 and iPhone 14 Pro

Meizu has published the official teaser with the technical parameters of its new flagship Meizu 20 Pro. Right at the very beginning of the indiscreet document, it says: “maybe this is the most beautiful mobile phone in history” …
Everything would be fine, but at the moment the device looks like a collection of quotes: the main camera is designed in the spirit of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and the flat side frame is exactly like the current iPhone. What about the front panel? It looks like almost any other smartphone with a flat screen and an embedded camera.
Among the advantages of the Meizu 20 Pro, the creators name an ideal 50/50 weight distribution (that is, the mass is distributed evenly throughout the phone), a thin screen frame (width is 1.57 mm), a 5000 mAh battery with support for 80 W wired charging and 50W wireless. The thickness of the smartphone is also indicated – it is 7.8 mm.
The Meizu 20 Pro was previously listed on Geekbench with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 single-chip system. There are also examples of photos taken by the main camera of the phone. The official premiere of the Meizu 20 flagships is scheduled for March 30.

Startups use GPT-4 to save on live programmers

Network publications reported that a number of startups began to use the GPT-4 language model from OpenAI to save on developers. AI is said to be capable of generating code.
For example, Landscape startup founder Joe Perkins said on Twitter that he wrote the code for five microservices using a neural network, it took him only 3 hours, and the code turned out to be at a good level. If he wrote everything by hand, he would have to spend several weeks and 5 thousand pounds sterling.
According to Vice, who spoke with Perkins, he studied computer science at school, but his knowledge was only enough to understand the code, and not to write it. So GPT-4 was the right solution. And although Perkins continues to collaborate with developers, the language model simplifies development, speeds it up, and saves money.
But the executive director of online education at the Georgia Institute of Technology David Joyner (David Joyner) said that language models are unlikely to replace programmers. They are more likely to become assistants and take on some of the work.
Thus, GPT-4 is sure to become a sought-after tool in the market soon, and developers will have to learn how to use it in order to be in demand.
