As it became known, one of the goals for the first year of work will be two super-Earths located about 50 light years from Earth.

The exoplanets 55 Cancri e and LHS 3844 b share a class (these are super-Earths, that is, rocky planets are noticeably larger than the Earth) and the fact that they orbit very close to their parent stars. But the conditions on these planets, according to available data, are very different.

55 Cancri e is less than 2.4 million km from the star. For comparison, the diameter of the Sun is almost 1.4 million km. A year on this planet lasts less than 18 hours, and the temperature on the day side is such that there should be one continuous ocean of lava. At the same time, scientists believe that the planet is in tidal capture, that is, it always faces the star on one side. And this means that on the other side it is always night and much colder.

Observations of the exoplanet have led scientists to speculate that it has a dense atmosphere of oxygen and nitrogen that moves heat from the day side to the night side. Although there is another theory that takes into account the possibility of rotation of the planet. In this case, it should rain from lava. In any case, the James Webb telescope has the tools to better understand 55 Cancri e.

LHS 3844 b has been observed to have no atmosphere. At the same time, the year on this planet is even shorter – only 11 hours. But since the parent star is much smaller and colder, the surface of LHS 3844 b does not melt. This will allow astronomers to study the composition of the rocks of the exoplanet (through spectrography).

The James Webb team says the telescope is weeks away from being fully operational.

NASA believes that Capstone will reach the goal in three months and spend at least six months in orbit. The space department indicates that the Capstone trajectory scheme is such that the device will arrive in its lunar orbit on November 13, regardless of the launch date “in the current period” – which is any day before July 27.
