The world’s first Snapdragon 888 smartphone with a foldable screen, four speakers, a lens camera and a Windows-like interface. Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold presented

Yesterday, Xiaomi pleased the flagships Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra, this afternoon announced the production of its own electric vehicles, and a little later presented its first smartphone with a folding screen. The novelty is called MI Mix Fold and is the most affordable model among its kind. But, before moving on to prices, let’s consider the characteristics of the model.

The big advantage of the new product is that it is built on a single-chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 platform – neither the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 nor the Huawei Mate X2 can boast of such high performance. But as for the principle of folding (or unfolding), it is the same for all three models. Xiaomi claims that the main display can withstand a million fold-unfold cycles.

At the heart of the internal screen is an 8.01-inch AMOLED panel – and this gives the right Xiaomi to call the Mi Mix Fold the smartphone with the largest internal screen. After all, the Huawei Mate X2 has a diagonal of exactly 8 inches, and the Samsung model has even less. The screen has a resolution of 2480 x 1860 pixels, supports HDR10 + and Dolby Vision, and provides 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. The declared brightness is 600 cd / m2, the contrast is 4,300,000: 1.

During the announcement, the head of Xiaomi Lei Jun emphasized many times that it is convenient to watch movies and play games on such a large screen. The top manager even noted that he, who does not like games, enjoys playing them on Mi Mix Fold. But for those present in the hall, a much greater surprise was a specialized interface mode called Desktop Mode – in it Android on the Mi Mix Fold screen acquires … the look of Windows! With a peculiar Start menu in the left corner and a characteristic arrangement of other elements.

This is how Desktop Mode looks like in Mi Mix Fold

Of course, Xiaomi has thoroughly worked on the multi-window mode – so that the user can make the most of the entire area of the internal screen to suit his needs. The display can be divided in half between the two applications, or you can place several open programs in arbitrary places.

If the aspect ratio of the inner screen is 4: 3, then the outer screen is stretched out narrow and long: its aspect ratio is 27: 9 (resolution is 2520 x 840 pixels). It also uses an AMOLED panel, but its diagonal is already much smaller – 6.52 inches. The outdoor display also supports HDR10 +, with a maximum brightness of 700 cd / m2 and a frame rate of 90 Hz.

Mi Mix Fold is equipped with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 flash memory. The fingerprint scanner is located on the side and is built into the power key; there are NFC, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 adapters.

Mi Mix Fold became the world’s first smartphone with four loudspeakers, and here, as in the Mi 10S, as well as the new MI 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra, Harman Kardon speakers are used.

From one innovation to another: Mi Mix Fold received a lens camera, which we have already written about in detail. The camera of this model is much simpler than in the same Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra, but it has a place for three sensors with a resolution of 108, 13 and 8 megapixels, as well as a 30x zoom. The module, which uses a lens-lens, is responsible for both optical zoom and macro photography.

Mi Mix Fold received two rechargeable batteries with a total capacity of 5020 mAh, charging with a capacity of 67 watts is supported.

Prices are announced. The base Mi Mix Fold with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of flash memory costs $ 1,520, which is at least one and a half times cheaper than competitors Samsung and Huawei. The version with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of flash is priced at $ 1,675. The third option is the exclusive Ceramic Special Edition with a carbon-look ceramic back. It has 16GB of RAM, 512GB of flash storage and a price tag of $ 1,975. Pre-orders for Mi Mix Fold are already being accepted in China, with real sales starting on April 16. This model will not be sold on the global market yet.

Specialists of the popular iFixit resource, specializing in the repair of various electronics, disassembled the new Apple Watch Series 7 smartwatch and shared the results with the public.

Firstly, the watch scored 6 points on a 10-point scale of maintainability and generally positive reviews for its modular design, easy access to the screen and battery. Experts also praised Apple for keeping the Apple Watch Series 7 compatible with previous generations of bands, right up to the very first original Apple Watch.

As mentioned several times, the main difference between this device and the Series 6 is the enlarged display. Disassembling iFixit revealed that the watch uses an OLED panel with an integrated touchscreen (on-cell touch), this technology debuted in the iPhone 13.

According to experts, this is an unusual approach for Apple, which usually prefers to experiment with new screen technologies on watches, and then implement them on smartphones – as happened with OLED, variable refresh rate and the function of “always on” screen.

IFixit partnered with three former Apple engineers to disassemble the Apple Watch Series 7. As they noted, it was the new display that could cause delays in production and force the company to release the device later than it would like.

When Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 7 in September, it didn’t announce a specific release date. Former Apple engineers said this is usually indicative of delays, and the most likely cause is a manufacturing glitch caused by watch displays. They explained, “The screens have some of the most complex supply chains and assembly processes in the industry.”

The iFixit experts also found that the Apple Watch Series 7 has a larger battery compared to its predecessor. However, this did not lead to an increase in battery life, since the larger screen consumes more power.
