The US will check where Huawei got the chips for the rapidly gaining popularity of the flagship Huawei Mate 60 Pro

According to Bloomberg, the United States will find out the origin of the chips in the new line of flagship smartphones Huawei Mate 60 and Huawei Mate 60 Pro against the backdrop of sanctions imposed against the Chinese semiconductor industry.

“I’m going to refrain from commenting on this Huawei chip until we get more information about its architecture. However, the fact that such a processor is being developed suggests that the United States must continue its course of imposing technological restrictions related solely to national security issues, ”said Jake Sullivan, Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security.

According to Bloomberg, the single-chip system used is only a few years behind the advanced American developments. The manufacturer of this mobile platform was the Chinese company Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), which was previously on the sanctions list of the US government. Bloomberg writes that the release of a modern flagship based on the 7nm Kirin 9000s processor indicates that China has managed to “achieve some success in achieving independence from American semiconductors.”

Earlier it became known that Kirin 9000s is manufactured using the 7 nm (N + 2) process technology. Until then, SMIC’s state-of-the-art process technology was 12nm.

Initial sales were about 800,000 units, excluding pre-orders. These are only sales of one Mate 60 Pro model. More than 10,000 user ratings for Huawei Mate 60 Pro have already appeared on the Huawei Mall website with a positive rating of 99%. Cumulative shipments of the Mate 60 Pro are expected to reach at least 12 million units 12 months after launch.

The Firefox browser now has a built in page translator that

Mozilla has announced the release of an update to its Firefox browser. In version number 118, users will find a significant innovation – a built-in translator for entire pages, which is significantly different from the translation services of competitors, including Google Translate or Microsoft Bing Translator.

The Firefox 118 release note notes:

Automatic translation of web content is now available to Firefox users! Unlike cloud-based alternatives, translation is done locally in Firefox, so the translated text never leaves your computer.

Simply put, the translator does not require a connection to servers and can work offline; during translation, the data does not leave the user’s computer and is not sent to Microsoft, Google or other companies.

If the user has opened a website in a supported language that is different from the browser’s default language, a translation icon will appear in the address bar. When you click PIR, a pop-up window appears asking from which language and into which language you want to translate. If your browser does not automatically detect the language of a website, you can set it manually. You can also select the settings “always translate” or “never translate”.

Now for the bad news: Firefox full-page translation currently only supports 9 languages:

  • Bulgarian
  • Dutch
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish

Mozilla notes that there are other limitations. For example, the tool may not handle websites with mixed language content very well, and there is no translation of text from images or videos.

As users have noticed, when opening the Maps application in Windows 11, a message appears: “By the end of 2023, offline maps will no longer be available in the Maps application.” After this date, you will not be able to view offline maps in the application.

The decision to end support is most likely due to the expiration of the agreement between Nokia, its Here brand and Microsoft.

Microsoft acquired Nokia’s mapping and navigation business (Here) in 2015, and since then both companies have been working together to create offline maps for Windows.

Intels recent statement was misinterpreted There will still be no

Intel seems to have decided to confuse the public with its plans for the desktop processor segment. It turns out that there will still be no full-fledged desktop models of Meteor Lake-S.

Intel's recent statement was misinterpreted. There will still be no full-fledged Meteor Lake-S desktop processors

Yes, Intel executive vice president and general manager of the client computing group Michelle Johnston Holthaus said just the day before yesterday that such CPUs would be released in 2024, which raised questions about three lines at once in one year. However, it now turns out that Holthaus did not actually mean the desktop segment in the form in which it is usually understood. Meteor Lake processors will indeed appear in desktop PCs, but this does not mean that such CPUs can be purchased separately and assembled into a computer based on them. In fact, Meteor Lake-S in the desktop segment will only be available in all-in-one PCs.

Meteor Lake is a power-efficient architecture that will power innovative mobile and desktop designs, including desktop form factors such as All-in-One (AIO). We will share more details about the product in the future

Intel

Intel already has experience releasing core KB desktop processors, which were only available in mini-PCs. Apparently, it will be the same story with Meteor Lake-S. Moreover, it is likely that technically these processors will completely copy mobile versions, except that the TDP may be higher.

That is, in 2024 we will have only two desktop lines: Raptor Lake Refresh, which will be released in October of this year, and then Arrow Lake-S sometime next year.
