The test results of the new Apple M2 Max single-chip system appeared in the database of the popular Geekbench benchmark, which turned out to be much higher than the first leak showed.
In single-threaded mode, the Apple M2 Max scores 2027 points, and when using all cores, the result was 14888 points. For comparison, the Apple M1 Max scores 1787 and 12826 points in the Geekbench benchmark, respectively.
When the first test results for the Apple M2 Max came out, they were much worse. Then the new single-chip system did not show noticeable improvements compared to its predecessor. The results were 1853 points in single mode and 13855 when using all cores.
In both cases, the tests identify the device as Mac 14.6. Mentions of this model were first discovered in July 2022, presumably, we are talking about the MacBook Pro 2023 or Mac Studio.
In any case, new devices based on the Apple M2 Max should appear before 2023.
“Game developers have never seen 96GB of graphics memory.” Apple believes that its Mac computers in the future may well become gaming solutions
It seems that with the transition of Apple to its own processors for Mac, the company decided to take a swing at the market of gaming systems at the same time. Apple Vice President of Platform Architecture and Hardware Technology Tim Millet and Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Bob Borchers spoke about this in an interview.
In particular, they said that over time, Apple computers will become much more suitable for gamers. And it’s not about performance, which is already quite good, but about creating games for Mac.
After Capcom introduced Resident Evil and other games, I think the community is starting to wake up to this possibility. Because what we have now, with our portfolio of Apple M-based Macs, is a set of incredibly powerful computers and a growing audience of people who have these incredibly powerful systems, and everything can be solved with a single code base. that develops over time. And we’re adding new APIs and extending the capabilities of Metal in Metal 3 and so on. And if you’re thinking about the possibility of extending this to the iPad and iPhone, I think that’s a huge opportunity.
The story began many years ago when we envisioned moving to our own platforms. Gamers are a serious group. We will not deceive anyone by saying that overnight we will make the Mac a great gaming platform. We are going to work for a long time. We didn’t set out to design GPUs for this area that were unnecessarily complex with non-iOS features. But when we looked at the Mac, we realized that this is a different beast.
Apple experts note that already now the current generation of Mac has unusual advantages. For example, a very large amount of total RAM.
Game developers have never seen the 96GB of graphics memory available to them now on the M2 Max. I think they are trying to figure it out because the possibilities are unusual. They are used to working with much less video memory. So I think this is another place where we will have an interesting opportunity to inspire developers to go beyond what they have done before.
Thus, Apple makes it clear that the gaming market for it is no longer something insignificant. But at the same time, the company does not even roughly give any guidelines on the timing, which, however, is logical, since it does not depend on it, but on game developers.
Samsung Galaxy S23 software occupies 60 GB of phone memory – twice as much as Windows 11 installed on a computer
An unexpectedly unpleasant discovery was found in Samsung Galaxy S23 phones: as it turned out, the operating system with the proprietary One UI interface and installed applications takes up about 60 GB in the phone’s memory. If a user buys a base Galaxy S23 with 128 GB of flash memory, then we can assume that half of this amount is already gone.
Reportedly, the system does not take up as much space in all cases: the problem is more pronounced in the US and European countries. For comparison, below are two screenshots: the one on the left is taken on the Galaxy S23 Ultra for India, the one on the right is taken on the Galaxy S23 Ultra for the Netherlands. As you can see, in the first case, the system occupies 38.39 GB, in the second – 58.04 GB.
Such a large amount of software is associated with a large number of pre-installed applications. Moreover, in some cases, a Samsung branded application or service duplicates a similar application or Google service, but both are systemic and cannot be deleted.
For comparison, the software in Pixel 7 phones takes up about 15 GB, and about the same amount of MIUI 14 firmware on Android 13 in Xiaomi 13.
Microsoft began testing “native” Skype for new Apple computers
Microsoft has released an update to the test version of Skype for members of the Skype Insider program. This update will be a big step forward for all those who use Skype for Mac, built on Apple’s proprietary SoCs.
The current stable version of Skype for Mac is designed to run on devices with Intel processors. Of course, thanks to Rosetta 2, all applications that were originally designed to run on Macs with Intel processors can run on M1 Macs with minimal performance degradation.
However, the native Skype application will no longer rely on Rosetta 2 to run on Macs based on the Apple M1. This promises an increase in speed and performance.
Previously, a native app with Apple M1 support was also released for Microsoft Teams. Presumably, in a month, the Apple M1-enabled Skype application will be available to ordinary users, and not just to test participants.
