Processors and video cards of the new generation, among other things, stand out with very high frequencies even against the background of their predecessors, not to mention older solutions. The ComputerBase resource decided to check at what frequencies modern GPUs can really work, if not resorting to extreme overclocking.

For testing, they took several GeForce RTX 4080 and Radeon RX 7900 XTX. The tests involved reference and non-reference cards.

Let’s start with AMD’s flagship. At the time of the announcement, the company said that the new architecture is somehow optimized to operate at frequencies up to 3 GHz. However, later it turned out that the actual GPU frequencies are much lower: up to 2500 MHz. However, AMD was not lying.

The RX 7900 XTX can indeed run at around 3 GHz for the GPU, and it doesn’t need to use liquid nitrogen. But you will need a non-reference adapter, which can significantly increase the power limit. For example, Sapphire Nitro +, where the figure can be increased to 500 watts.

As a result, as we can see, the frequency of the GPU can reach values ​​slightly above 3 GHz. On average, for a large number of games, the value was 2832 MHz versus 2554 MHz for the reference card. At the same time, unlike RDNA 2, the RDNA 3 architecture requires a huge amount of energy to achieve maximum frequencies. An 11% increase in frequency leads to a 41% increase in consumption.

The GeForce RTX 4080, which is a direct competitor to the RX 7900 XTX, offers an average frequency of 2725MHz for the reference card and 2944MHz for the Asus TUF model. At the same time, although consumption is growing as noticeably as that of a competitor, in absolute terms it is significantly lower. Actually, the overclocked Asus card requires about the same amount of power as the reference RX 7900 XTX.

Thus, both cards and both architectures allow the GPU to operate at a frequency close to 3 GHz, sometimes even exceeding this value. At the same time, the AMD card rests on power limits, and the new Nvidia is already on the architecture’s capabilities. That is, the potential of the first is higher, but you have to pay for it with impressive power consumption. Overclocking can improve the performance of the RX 7900 XTX by about 10-11%, while the increase in the RTX 4080 is about 7-8%.

But that’s not all. It turns out that with a different type of GPU load, Navi 31 can simply show miracles. In Blender, the core clock of the reference card stays just above 3 GHz, while the overclocked Sapphire card shows between 3.4-3.5 GHz! And this is without extreme overclocking. At the same time, the RTX 4080 performs almost the same as in games.

The source’s experts suggest that such a huge difference in frequencies under different loads for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is a consequence of the fact that AMD did initially develop a new architecture for working in games at frequencies of about 3 GHz or higher, but in the end it turned out that for this card you need a lot of energy, and I had to lower the power limits. By the way, we can recall that long before the announcement, reliable sources spoke of frequencies far beyond 3 GHz and even close to 4 GHz. Actually, they were not mistaken – technically it is possible.

More precisely, the company representative said that most games will run on Snapdragon X Elite. Here, of course, we are not talking about GPU performance, about which we still don’t really know anything, but about the technical side. Since we’re talking about the Arm platform, running software built for x86-bit architecture requires certain manipulations. Qualcomm says game developers will have three options to choose from.

First, they can port their games to ARM64 to achieve the best CPU performance and power consumption. Of course, no one will do this for the sake of laptops on Snapdragon X Elite at first.

Second, developers can create a hybrid ARM64EC application where Windows, its libraries, and Qualcomm drivers run natively, but the rest of the application is emulated to achieve near-native performance. This also requires additional actions from developers. But the third option is that developers can do practically nothing, and their games should still work, but using x64 emulation. It is not yet known how much performance will suffer. Let us remember that the problem is that Snapdragon X Elite does not support discrete video cards, that is, in any case, it relies only on its own GPU.
