NASA specialists have replaced gaskets in the fuel system of the Space Launch System super-heavy launch vehicle, the launch of which was previously delayed as part of the Artemis 1 lunar mission due to a leak of liquid hydrogen.

Earlier, NASA noted that work on the repair of the SLS is carried out directly at the launch site of the cosmodrome at Cape Canaveral (Florida). This will allow technicians to test the liquid hydrogen line “under cryogenic conditions” after the work is completed on site and collect “as much data as possible” about the causes of the problem.

After disconnecting the fuel supply line, the experts “replaced gaskets on the SLS main stage due to a liquid hydrogen leak detected during a launch attempt on September 3”, according to the NASA website. Now experts are planning to evaluate the system over the weekend. On September 17, a test filling of the main stage of the launch vehicle with liquid fuel will be carried out, which will allow experts to test the system at ultra-low temperatures.

Earlier, the head of NASA’s Research Systems Development Directorate, Jim Free, said at a press conference that another attempt to launch a super-heavy launch vehicle with the Orion spacecraft to the Moon could be made on September 23. September 27th was chosen as a backup launch date.

The launch of the SLS from the JFK site in Florida was scheduled for last Saturday, but it was delayed due to a leak of liquid hydrogen while fueling the rocket’s main stage. On August 29, the flight was also delayed due to a hydrogen leak during refueling. Since April 2021, NASA engineers have been assembling the rocket that will be launched as part of the Artemis 1 lunar mission.

Firefly Aerospace, a private space company, successfully launched a rocket and put several mini-satellites into orbit.

The Alpha rocket is a lightweight rocket, meaning it can launch approximately 1.2 tons of payload. This is the second rocket launch, the first took place in September last year, but the rocket exploded after launch due to the failure of one of the engines. This time everything went smoothly. The mission itself is called Alpha Flight 2: To The Black.

At the same time, the launch was originally planned for the morning of September 30, but the rocket engines turned off almost immediately after they were launched – the automatic abort system worked. The reasons for this were not explained, the company only reported that such behavior was provided for by the security system.

Firefly Aerospace intends to take part of the small satellite launch market. Each launch is valued at $15 million. Thus, the company intends to compete with SpaceX, Rocket Lab, Virgin Orbit and Astra. Firefly Aerospace is a privately held aerospace company headquartered in Austin, Texas.
