The latest Windows 10 update “broke” the sound on computers

Microsoft released the mandatory traditional monthly Patch Tuesday for the Windows 10 operating system earlier this week. As is often the case, not everything went smoothly.

Users started complaining about audio problems after the update. They mainly occurred in those who installed the Windows 10 update KB5003173, which was released on May 11 for versions of Windows 10 20H2 (October 2020 update) and 2004 (May 2020 update). But there are also complaints from users of other versions of Windows 10.

Problems arise randomly, including in games. Users complain about much lower than normal volume, mute and high frequency noise, even when using the system’s default volume settings. However, this does not affect the audio played in the Microsoft Edge browser.

The good news is that Microsoft has already acknowledged the issue in a new update on the support site. According to the company, some devices (notably 5.1 Dolby Digital) can produce high noise on computers running all the latest versions of Windows 10.
