Yesterday, Nvidia officially introduced the GeForce RTX 40 mobile accelerators, and today the promising Thunderobot Zero 2023 laptop appeared in the Geekbench database in two versions – with the GeForce RTX 4060 and RTX 4070. Thus, you can compare the performance of the two accelerators.

In the OpenCL test, the GeForce RTX 4070 scored 114074 points, the GeForce RTX 4060 scored 101,850 points. The older model was only 12% faster. Geekbench has little to do with actual gaming performance, so the difference may be bigger in games, but perhaps even more importantly, the new accelerators are not much faster than the current GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3070 Ampere family. However, this is easily explained by the characteristics.

If the mobile GeForce RTX 4070 has 4608 CUDA cores and a 128-bit bus with 8 GB of GDDR6 memory, then the GeForce RTX 3070 5120 CUDA cores and the same 8 GB of memory, but with a 256-bit bus. The GeForce RTX 4060 has 3072 CUDA cores and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory connected to the GPU using a 128-bit bus, while the GeForce RTX 3060 has 3840 CUDA cores and a 192-bit bus, although the memory is less at 6 GB. In other words, Nvidia has significantly reduced the parameters of new products, but due to general architectural improvements, they are faster.

In the picture you can see the AD107 and AD106 GPUs. So far, there are no processor data carriers in the desktop segment, but they have already been announced in the mobile segment: these are the RTX 4050/4060 and RTX 4070.

The new GPUs are very compact. The smaller one has an area of ​​about 150-160 mm2, and the larger one has an area of ​​180-190 mm2. In comparison, the AD104, which the desktop RTX 4070 Ti is based on and the mobile RTX 4090 is supposed to be based on, measures almost 300mm2.

The AD107 has 3072 CUDA cores while the AD106 offers 4608 CUDA cores. In both cases, video cards will have a 128-bit memory bus.

Laptops based on graphics cards with these GPUs should hit the market soon.
