The former head of Google believes that the United States will not be able to break away from China in the technology race without the help of Japan and Korea

Eric Schmidt, co-founder of Schmidt Futures and who was Google’s CEO, executive chairman and technical advisor to Alphabet, believes the US must take action to maintain its AI dominance over China.

In an interview with a source, Schmidt admitted that he overestimated China’s lag behind the United States in artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

The situation is very serious, according to the former Google CEO, who in 2019 chaired a committee that advises the US president and Congress on AI policy.

The commission’s final report, released in March, said that “if the United States does not act, it is likely to lose its lead in AI to China in the next decade and become more vulnerable to a spectrum of AI threats from government and non-state actors ”.

To win the technology competition with China, Schmidt said, the US must maintain its leadership in “strategic” areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, energy, quantum computing, and synthetic biology.

And for that, he said, “we need closer relations with Japanese researchers, Japanese universities, the Japanese government, and the same with the South Koreans, and the same with the Europeans.”

Whether the administration will take into account the commission’s recommendations, Schmidt said, will become clear before the end of this year. The commission itself is to be disbanded in October.
