The FBI stole cryptocurrency from hackers, which they obtained through extortion. Funds returned to Colonial Pipeline

The FBI has returned to Colonial Pipeline most of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency that the company paid out to the ransomware earlier this year.

On May 7 this year, the Colonial Pipeline, which owns the largest oil pipeline system in the United States, was cyberattacked by the DarkSide hacker group. The attack caused the system to malfunction, which is why Colonial Pipeline decided to pay the 75 bitcoins demanded by the attackers. With the help of the FBI, the company did so a few hours after the attack.

And now the FBI has managed to return the Colonial Pipeline to its cryptocurrency. More precisely, 63.7 bitcoins. True, now the cryptocurrency has dropped significantly, so it costs not 4.4 million, as in May, but 2.3 million. However, until Colonial Pipeline sells its cryptocurrency, it is incorrect to talk about the lost millions.

The situation is interesting in that there are no official details about how exactly the FBI was able to return the cryptocurrency, because no one has yet managed to crack the bitcoin encryption. The source says that it was only officially announced that the key to the attackers’ cryptocurrency wallet was held by the FBI, which allowed the bureau to transfer the assets stored there to its wallet.

But here it is worth remembering that just a week after the attack, the hackers from the DarkSide grouping themselves said that its servers had been hijacked, as a result of which the cryptocurrency was withdrawn from its accounts.
