The dark theme is not a panacea: even on OLED screens, dark mode does not help much to extend battery life

In recent years, smartphone makers have been actively promoting the dark theme on smartphones as a way to extend the battery life of their devices.

A new study from Purdue University has shown that, in reality, dark mode does not significantly affect battery life, given the way most people use their phones in everyday life.

Of course, this is not to say that the dark theme is useless in terms of extending autonomy. However, this leads to noticeable results only if certain conditions are met, even for smartphones with OLED screens.

Dark mode has a significant effect only when the user switches from the standard light interface to dark with a brightness close to 100%. However, in most cases, the average brightness is kept at the level of 30-50%. In this case, the dark mode allows you to get a runtime increase of only 3-9%. And the user is unlikely to feel the positive effect in terms of increased runtime.

It is unlikely that many of us are constantly “cranking” the brightness to the maximum level on a constant basis. Thus, one cannot count on a tangible increase in autonomy. The researchers concluded that marketers are still quite cunning and exaggerate the effect of using dark theme on device autonomy.

One researcher explained:

When the industry rushed to dark mode, there were no tools to accurately measure the power consumption of screen pixels. But now we can provide developers with the tools they need to create more energy efficient applications. ”

The study looked at the six most downloaded apps on Google Play: Google Maps, Google News, Google Phone, Google Calendar, YouTube, and Calculator. Researchers analyzed how dark mode affects 60 seconds of activity in each of these apps on the Pixel 2, Moto Z3, Pixel 4, and Pixel 5.

All leaders will lose, but Apple will strengthen. TrendForce published a forecast for the smartphone market

The market leaders were Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, but the current quarter will temporarily change the balance of power. According to analysts, Apple will increase its share from 17.6% to 24.6%, overtaking Samsung, which will occupy 20.2% against the current 22.2%. This is not the first time that Apple has become a market leader in the fourth quarter, which is explained by the release of a new generation of iPhone.

At the same time, it can be seen that the source predicts a decrease in market share for all leaders, except for Apple. It is worth noting that in this case, the source considers the sales of Oppo as sales including Realme, which is not typical. It also counts OnePlus sales, but that’s normal after a merger.

Another flagship killer from Redmi Redmi K60 will receive 16

Another flagship killer from Redmi? Redmi K60 will receive 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of flash memory

The RAM will not only be more than the current Redmi K50 Extreme Edition (12 GB), but also more than the promising Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro – they are also credited with 12 GB of RAM in the top version. If we also consider that Redmi flagships are always cheaper than Xiaomi flagships of the same year, we can think that Redmi K60 will be presented as another flagship killer. Moreover, it will be their own (flagship) weapon to fight with the tops: Redmi K60 is credited with SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. In addition, a 2K screen, support for 120-watt charging and a 50-megapixel camera with OIS are also expected.

According to rumors, the premiere of Redmi K60 will take place at the very beginning of 2023. The series is also expected to include Redmi K60E and Redmi K60 Pro, but they will be built on other platforms.
