The cheapest smartphone and other phones are on hold. The reason is the lack of components

Published

on

Recently, Indian telecom giant Reliance Jio announced that the world’s cheapest smartphone, JioPhone Next, would go on sale on September 10, but it was later announced that the launch was postponed to November 4.

The company has confirmed that the reason for the postponement of the release date is a global shortage of chips. According to Counterpoint Research, the JioPhone Next isn’t the only device hit by severe component shortages and delivery delays. The research company said that many of the leading smartphone manufacturers are delaying or limiting the release of their products to certain markets due to manufacturing issues.

Against the backdrop of ongoing shortages, there is also an increase in the cost of key components such as memory, processors and other microcircuits. This in turn leads to the fact that the prices of smartphones are rising in some markets. A prime example is Redmi, which has quadrupled the price of the Redmi Note 10 series this year in the Indian market.

According to Counterpoint Research, 190 smartphone models are expected to be released in a year, up from 207 in the previous year. So far, the companies have completed about 103 smartphone launches.

It remains to be seen how many devices will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, which is the main sales period. It usually accounts for about a third of annual sales.
