The best camera phones of 2022 have a serious competitor. Introduced ZTE Axon 40 Ultra with a triple main 64-megapixel camera and a front sub-screen
Today, ZTE officially unveiled its flagship smartphone Axon 40 Ultra. The novelty received a high-quality main camera, due to which it will surely be able to compete with the best camera phones already on the market – Galaxy S22 Ultra, iPhone 13 Pro Max and Honor Magic4 Ultimate.
In terms of design and appearance, the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra has a big advantage – it has an under-screen camera, so the screen is one-piece, without any cutouts or “cutouts”. The display, by the way, is not small, and also quite high quality: the smartphone received a 6.8-inch OLED BOE panel with a resolution of 2480 x 1116 pixels, a frame rate of 120 Hz and a maximum brightness of 1500 cd/sq.m. The screen is curved, it enters the sidewalls at an angle of 71°. The sub-screen front camera uses a 16-megapixel sensor.
At the heart of the hardware platform is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 SoC coupled with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS3.1 flash memory.
There are three modules in the main camera, all three use 64-megapixel sensors: two use Sony IMX787, and the third, periscope, uses OmniVision OV64B. The main module uses a lens with an equivalent focal length of 35 mm, the second module uses a lens with a 16 mm EGF. The EGF of the periscope module lens is 91 mm. Thus, the optical zoom achieved due to the difference in the EGF of the lenses is 5.7x. An optical image stabilization system is implemented in the main and periscope modules.
ZTE Axon 40 Ultra received a 5000 mAh battery with support for 80 W fast charging. Also in the configuration of the device – stereo speakers, three microphones, an IR emitter. The thickness is 8.41 mm, weight – 204 grams. The operating system was Android 12 with MyOS 12 interface.
Of course, with such parameters, the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra turned out to be expensive, but the manufacturer did not stint on flash memory: this is the first flagship of 2022 with 256 GB of flash memory in the basic version. It also has 8 GB of RAM. The cost of this option is $745. The cost of the remaining variants of the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is as follows: 12/256 – $790, 12/512 GB – $ 860, 16 GB / 1 TB – $ 1085.

For example, BestBuy is selling an unlocked Pixel 7 for just $350! Recall that the device started at a price of 600 dollars, that is, there is a discount of more than 40%! The Pixel 7 Pro is also on sale for $600 or 33% off. That is, the Pixel 7 Pro is sold at the price of the Pixel 7.
Google itself is also now offering good discounts, but still not as impressive as in the case of BestBuy. For the Pixel 7, the company is asking $450, while the Pixel 7 Pro is $750. It’s also worth mentioning that the Pixel 6a is currently only $300 and BestBuy is giving away $250!
A comparison with Apple prices will not be superfluous. It turns out that the Pixel 7 Pro can now be bought for the price of the iPhone 13 mini, and the Pixel 7 costs much less than the iPhone SE. The price of the Pixel 6a is out of the question.

The founder of research companies Display Supply Chain Consultants and DisplaySearch Ross Young (Ross Young) claims that the diagonal of the main screen will decrease from 8 to 7.85 inches. At the same time, interestingly, the external screen will allegedly remain at the same diagonal of 6.45 inches. True, the aspect ratio may change.
What is more important is the presence of an ultra-thin protective glass on the main screen. For Huawei, this will be the first foldable smartphone with such a glass, while Samsung has been using it for several years. But here it is worth recalling that, at least in Samsung smartphones, this glass is still covered with a protective plastic film on top, which is easy to scratch.
Early reports said that the Mate X3 will have a Snapdraogn 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC and a 4800mAh battery with 66W charging.

The maximum frequencies of single-chip systems for smartphones have not changed for many years. But the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC could be very different from anything that came before. According to MyDrivers, Qualcomm’s new platform’s super-core frequency could reach an impressive 3.72 GHz!
For comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is 3.2 GHz, while the version for Galaxy has a frequency increased to 3.36 GHz. That is, there will be an increase of 16% relative to the regular version. And in general, this is a very high value for mobile SoCs based on the Arm architecture.
According to leaks, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will have a configuration of 1 + 5 + 2, that is, there will be only two energy-efficient cores. This should greatly improve performance even without taking into account frequencies, but how voracious such a platform will be is an open question.
The network already has the result of the new SoC in Geekbench, where the platform scores 1930 and 6236 points in single-threaded and multi-threaded modes, respectively, but this is so much that for now it is worth treating this result with caution.
