The all-new 2024 BMW 5-Series sedan is unveiled. This is the most significant update in the entire 50-year history of the model
Today, BMW officially unveiled the new eighth generation 5-Series sedan. The car has noticeably changed in appearance, but most importantly – for the first time in the series there is a pure BMW i5 electric car. Prices have already been announced, but dealers in the United States (where the premiere took place) will have cars only in October.
The new BMWS 5-Series has noticeably gained in size, and most of all in length. It is now 5060 mm (an increase of 86.4 mm), and the wheelbase has stretched to almost 3 meters – it is 2995 mm.
BMW describes the new product as follows: “more modern and elegant than the 3-Series, more dynamic and sporty than the 7-Series.” Outwardly, it is not difficult to be more dynamic and sportier than the “seven” – it turned out to be too monumental. Interestingly, outwardly, conventional gasoline and electric BMWs are almost the same, and for a surcharge, both there and there, illumination of the “nostrils” is available.
BMW has been reluctant to upgrade the previous-generation 5’s media system, so the new 5-Series has taken the leap forward in that regard. The 12.3-inch screen in front of the driver is complemented by a 14.9-inch screen as part of the media system, and this is the latest generation of media system – BMW iDrive 8.5 with improved recognition of voice commands and gestures.
In addition, there are many other interesting things on board. For example, the AirConsole platform allows you to download and play games right in the car (though not on the go), and there is also the Interaction Bar system borrowed from the Seven. Finally, there is the Highway Assistant autobahn assistance system (it independently drives the car along the road at speeds up to 137 km / h and rebuilds when the driver looks in one of the side mirrors) and a fully automatic parking system.
Gasoline BMW 5-Series are not really gasoline – they are “mild” hybrids. The base engine (for the BMW 530i and 530i xDrive) is a 2.0-liter turbo with 258 hp. – in comparison with its predecessor, it added 7 hp. It takes 5.8-5.9 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h (the all-wheel drive version is a little faster). A step up is the BMW 540i xDrive with a 380-horsepower 3.0-liter biturbo engine. Up to 100 km / h, this version accelerates in 4.5 seconds.
There are two electric versions. Base – i5 eDrive40 with one 340 hp electric motor. on the rear axle. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. But the i5 M60 xDrive is a 598-horsepower hurricane with acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. Both electric versions received a traction battery with a capacity of 84.3 kWh.
Prices for the US market are: BMW 530i $57,900, BMW 530i xDrive $60,200, BMW 540i xDrive $64,900, BMW i5 eDrive40 $66,800, BMW i5 M60 xDrive $84,100.
