The European Processor Initiative (EPI), a 28-partner project from 10 countries with the goal of achieving EU independence in HPC technology and HPC infrastructure, has announced that the first samples of EPAC1.0 test chips have been shipped. Behind this designation is a RISC-V instruction set architecture processor entirely designed and manufactured in Europe. It consists of high energy efficiency and bandwidth IP cores called EPACs (European Processor Accelerators).
EPAC combines several acceleration technologies designed for a variety of applications. In particular, the test processor comprises four vector processing unit (VPU), consisting of Avispado RISC-V kernel developed SemiDynamics, and a vector processing unit, developed Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the University of Zagreb. Each block also contains a Home Node and L2 cache, designed respectively by Chalmers and FORTH, which provide a consistent view of the memory subsystem. The microcircuit also includes two additional accelerators: the Stencil and Tensor (STX) accelerator, developed by Fraunhofer IIS, ITWM and ETH Zürich, and the variable precision processor (VRP), developed by the CEA LIST specialists. All accelerators are connected to a high-speed internal network using converters developed by EXTOLL.
GlobalFoundries has manufactured and packaged 143 EPAC1.0 units using the 22FDX process for low power consumption. The 26.97 mm2 die contains 14 million layout elements (equivalent to 93 million keys), including 991 memory elements. The crystal is packed in an FCBGA package and is designed for such a frequency of 1 GHz.
The processor has already been tested in operation. The first program was executed on “bare metal”, which displayed the traditional message “Hello World!” different languages.
EPI will continue to develop, optimize and validate a variety of IP cores that will subsequently become available to processor and accelerator manufacturers and academics to enable the creation of “globally competitive industrial-grade building blocks for next-generation supercomputing systems.”
144Hz, Ryzen 7 5800H and full-featured GeForce RTX 3060. Xiaomi’s most powerful gaming laptop, Redmi G 2021, available to order worldwide
Third-party retailers have begun offering Xiaomi’s recent innovation, the Redmi G 2021 gaming laptop, which until now has only been sold in China – internationally.
Xiaomi launched the Redmi G 2021 in the Chinese market in September. The model is being promoted as the most powerful laptop ever produced under the Xiaomi brands. In China, a device with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor and a full-featured GeForce RTX 3060 is available for $ 1,085.
Now the global versions of Redmi G 2021 have become available for ordering internationally on several trading platforms at once – it is offered at least on AliExperss and Banggood.
The younger configuration, with Intel Core i5-11260H and GeForce RTX 3050, is offered by AliExperss and Banggood for $ 1,379.99 and $ 1,369.99, respectively. This variation, like the older one, offers a 16.1-inch screen with a 144 Hz refresh rate, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB solid-state drive. The older version, with AMD Ryzen 7 5800H and GeForce RTX 3060, is offered on AliExperss for $ 1,689.99.
No, the Apple M1 Max SoC is not capable of competing with the GeForce RTX 2080, but the performance is very high. There were tests of the new MacBook Pro in games
The GPU performance in the Apple M1 Max SoC exceeds 10 TFLOPS, which can be compared with the PS5 or GeForce RTX 2080. But the TFLOPS figure is not directly related to the performance in games. And now we have the opportunity to assess what Apple’s solution is capable of in games.
And it is really capable of a lot. In Tomb Rider, the top-end Apple platform performs at the level of the mobile GeForce RTX 3060. Yes, we are talking about the 70-watt version, that is, almost the slowest. Recall that the RTX 3060 for laptops has a power limit ranging from 60 to 115 watts.
However, we are still talking about a very productive mobile video card of the most modern generation. Yes, you need to wait for tests in more games to put together a more complete picture, but you can state the very high performance of Apple’s solution right now. M1 Pro, by the way, also looks decent. This is roughly the level of mobile GeForce RTX 3050 Ti or RTX 3050.
Of course, the MacBook Pro is not bought for games at all, since the situation with games on macOS is not easy. However, this does not prevent us from evaluating the new Apple SoCs simply in terms of their capabilities.
New MacBook Air due next year with Mini-LED display like new MacBook Pro, M2 processor and MagSafe
Several sources have shared details about the next generation MacBook Air. The well-known resource DigiTimes claims that the laptop will receive a Mini-LED screen like the recently debuted MacBook Pro. The new model will allow Apple to increase shipments of these notebooks by 2 million units per year. The report indicates that the 11-inch iPad Pro will also launch next year and will also receive a Mini LED screen.
iOS developer and Apple analyst, known on Twitter by nickname Dylan, has more details on the upcoming MacBook Air. According to him, the new product will be released in mid-2022, will receive support for MagSafe, a webcam that allows you to broadcast Full HD video, USB-C ports, a 30-watt charger. The device will be built on the M2 platform and will receive a completely passive cooling system. The bezels of the screen and keyboard will be reduced, and the top row of keys will become full-size. But there will be no FaceID system, SD card slot and HDMI video output.
