Tesla has begun equipping Model Y electric vehicles with the new center console featured in the Model 3 electric vehicle last year.

At the end of last year, Tesla released an updated version of the Model 3 with several updated features. One of the most notable changes is the new center console between the two front seats.

In the design, the glossy finish has given way to a matte finish. The console is now covered in faux leather on all sides. The smartphone charger has been moved to the top of the console. The center cover slides instead of opening as it used to.

The source notes that the automaker is still showing the old center console in the Model Y online configurator. Therefore, it is unclear whether all new Model Ys are manufactured with a new center console or while two variants are coming out of Tesla’s conveyors.

The Chinese are preparing their own fleet to deliver cars around the world

The Chinese are preparing their own fleet to deliver cars

According to Bloomberg, China’s two largest automakers are keen to establish a stable supply of their cars around the world, for which they decided to buy their own cargo ships.

BYD ordered at least six ships in October, each carrying 7,700 vehicles, for $710 million. The state company SAIC Motor has announced a tender for seven new vessels, each of which can accommodate 8,900 vehicles.

China recently overtook Germany to become the world’s second largest car exporter, shipping nearly 2.6 million vehicles overseas in the first 10 months of 2022, surpassing 2021 volumes. Even the unexpected drop in demand for Chinese goods in October didn’t stop the trend, with car exports up 60% year-over-year to 352,000 units over the period. As a result, the turnover amounted to a record 7.1 billion dollars.

China exported more than 852,000 electric vehicles in the first 10 months of this year, up from almost zero a few years ago. More than a fifth came from Tesla electric vehicles produced at a gigafactory in Shanghai.

The shortage of ships is further stretching the car supply chain. Daily rates for ships that can carry up to 6,500 vehicles have risen to about $100,000 per day as of October, more than ten times the 2020 level and the highest on record (from 2000 to according to Clarksons).

Under such conditions, some ships that are nearly 30 years old are still in service rather than being retired, increasing the risk of accidents.

After BMW and Hyundai-Kia ceased cooperation with Avtotor, the company began negotiations with three other partners, one of which is the Chinese BAIC. However, Avtotor is also working on its own projects, one of which is shown in the pictures below.

Like Chinese ultra-compact electric vehicles like the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, Geely Geometry M2 and Chery QQ Ice Cream, Yantar is designed for four, but has only three doors. One of the pictures suggests that the traction battery will be placed in the base, which will provide a low level of gravity, as well as a positive effect on handling and stability.

The slides say that the most expensive components of Yantar are the traction battery (it will account for 37% of the cost) and the body (21%). What engine will be used in the car is not reported, but Chinese counterparts use motors with a capacity of 30-40 hp. And they allow a car of this size to accelerate to 100 km / h.
