Store stopped selling Apple AirTags for security reasons

A new security issue related to Apple’s new AirTag tracker prompted Australian Officeworks to remove merchandise from its store shelves.

Initially, information appeared on the Reddit forum that the user unsuccessfully tried to purchase an Apple AirTag, but there was no such product in the assortment of Officeworks.

An Officeworks representative notified the user that Apple AirTags have been removed from store shelves for safety reasons due to easy access to the small battery.

The Apple AirTag line will be temporarily unavailable for purchase from Officeworks. The product will not be stored by Officeworks until further notice from the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The ACCC expects Apple to comply with Australia’s new information standard, which requires warning symbols on packaging and information in product instructions when it comes to coin-cell batteries. The deadline for filing an information standard in Australia is June 21, 2022.
