SSDs are more reliable than HDDs, according to data storage company Backblaze

A recent report from data storage company Backblaze confirms the company’s early findings that SSDs are more reliable than HDDs. However, while it turns out that the difference is small.

The company has been using SSD since 2018. Drives are used as boot drives for storage servers. As you can see, at the end of 2022, the failure rate was 0.98%. This is less than in 2021, but more than in 2020. However, given the fact that drives began to be used only in 2018, the data for 2020 is not particularly revealing.

One way or another, now the all-time indicator of the source is 0.89%. For comparison, for HDD it is about 1.64%, that is, about twice as high. And while a twofold difference is a big difference, especially for corporate clients, for consumers it is very close.

However, it is worth noting here that many of the SSDs used by Backblaze are very cheap drives, so it cannot be argued that the higher figure will remain for more expensive and high-quality consumer models.

Announced at the beginning of the year at CES 2024, the compact gaming laptop Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 has gone on sale in the United States. The device can be purchased in a configuration with a Ryzen 9 8945HS processor, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop 3D accelerator, 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD for $1,600. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 has a more interesting option – with 32 GB of RAM and a GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop. The price for this version is $2,000, but such laptops are not yet available.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 differs from its predecessor by having an OLED screen (with a resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels and a frame rate of 120 Hz) instead of an IPS panel, a new customizable OLED backlight and six speakers instead of four. In last year’s Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, the RAM could be changed independently; the 2024 model does not provide this option – the entire amount of RAM is soldered onto the motherboard.

The Kubuntu Focus range has been expanded with the fifth generation Focus M2 laptop. The model differs from its predecessor in the presence of the flagship Core i9-14900HX processor, which took the place of the Core i9-13900HX.

Focus M2 5 Gen is offered in two versions – with screens with a diagonal of 15.6 and 17.3 inches. Accordingly, the younger model is equipped with discrete GPUs GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop or GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop, while the older model is available with GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop or GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop.

The 17-inch version is equipped with a 99 Wh battery and three M.2 SSD slots, while the younger model has two SSD slots and an 80 Wh battery. Dimensions of the older model are 396 x 278 x 25 mm, the younger one is 358 x 240 x 25 mm.

Both versions are equipped with IPS screens with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, a frame rate of 240 Hz and a maximum brightness of 350 cd/m2. Interface connectors include two USB-C, DisplayPort and HDMI video outputs, and several USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A ports.

The laptops come pre-installed with Kubuntu 22.04 LTE with KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS. The cost of the basic version of the 15-inch model is $1,895.

The first test of the 35-watt AMD Ryzen 7 8700GE processor has appeared on the Internet. It has not yet been officially presented, but this is probably a matter of the near future. In the first tests, it was compared with the 65-watt Ryzen 7 8700G, and it turned out that with actually half the consumption, the performance of the Ryzen 7 8700GE is only about 20% lower.

In Cinebench R23, the Ryzen 7 8700GE scores 1,713 points in the single-thread test and 17,430 points in the multi-thread test, versus 1,879 and 22,121 points for the Ryzen 7 8700G. The difference, respectively, is 9% and 21% in favor of the 65-watt model. In CPU-Z the difference is even smaller – 1% and 13%, respectively.

Testers also tested the built-in graphics core – there is approximately the same difference in performance. For example, the lag of iGPU Ryzen 7 8700GE in 3DMark TimeSpy is only 18%, in Unigine Heaven Extreme it is already more significant 28%. But overall, when it comes to graphics, the Ryzen 7 8700GE is 23% slower.

At the same time, the Ryzen 7 8700GE will be more affordable than the Ryzen 7 8700G (by about $50), and the difference in maximum consumption reaches 52%: 42 W for the Ryzen 7 8700GE versus 88 W for the Ryzen 7 8700G.

As for the characteristics, they are almost the same for the Ryzen 7 8700GE and Ryzen 7 8700G (the Ryzen 7 8700GE only has a slightly lower frequency). There is an opinion that the Ryzen 7 8700GE is still the same Ryzen 7 8700G, but only limited by TDP.
