SpaceX’s Starlink satellites could potentially replace GPS navigation

The scientists presented the results of a study on the possibility of using LEO satellite signals for navigation.

Signals from SpaceX’s Starlink satellite systems, which provide high-speed broadband internet access, can be used to locate objects on the Earth’s surface with an accuracy of eight meters. This is stated in a new study by experts from Ohio State University and the University of California at Irvine (USA), conducted as part of a broader study on the possibility of using LEO satellite signals for navigation similar to GPS navigation.

This technology cannot replace mobile geographic maps on a smartphone, and during the first experiment, specialists took 13 minutes to track six Starlink satellites to determine their location on the surface of the Earth. However, the researchers were able to successfully establish the location without the help of SpaceX, which means the experiment proves that the method can be used for navigation.

“We intercepted the signal and then developed sophisticated algorithms to determine the location and demonstrated that they work with high accuracy. And although Starlink was not created for navigation purposes, we showed that it is possible to study parts of the system well enough and use it for navigation. also demonstrated that the method works with high accuracy, “said Zak Kassas, head of CARMEN (Center for Automated Vehicle Research with Multimodal AssurEd Navigation) at Ohio State University.

As explained by Cassas, “the team tested the same techniques on other constellations of LEO satellites, but with less accuracy – they managed to establish the location within 23 meters.”

“The team also worked with the US Air Force to geolocate the high-altitude aircraft, using ground cellular signals to locate a location within five meters,” Cassas said.

For reference, GPS systems provide signals with an average error of one meter.

“Since SpaceX has launched more than a thousand spacecraft into low-earth orbit, a renaissance of navigation based on LEO satellites has begun,” the study authors said.

The signals from low-orbit spacecraft are more powerful than the signals from medium-orbit satellites of the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) navigation system. Moreover, LEO spacecraft are more numerous than GNSS satellites to compensate for the smaller coverage area, and their signals are spatially and spectrally more diverse.

Another advantage of LEO satellites is that they do not require additional expensive maintenance or infrastructure from a broadband Internet provider.

The study, The First Carrier Phase Tracking and Positioning Results with Starlink LEO Satellite Signals, was published last week in the IEEE journal Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems.
