SpaceX sends 5,000 tardigrades and 128 glowing squids into space

SpaceX today launched the Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Dragon cargo ship, which carries 3.3 tons of cargo for the International Space Station, including research materials, various equipment and new solar panels. This is the 22nd ISS commercial resupply mission (CRS) for NASA.

The Falcon 9 took off from the Kennedy Space Center launch pad SLC-39A at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The first stage detached as planned and landed on a drone barge called Of Course I Still Love You in the Atlantic Ocean eight minutes after launch. The second stage, which put Dragon into orbit, separated 12 minutes after launch, also as planned.

Many experiments will be carried out with the materials and equipment on board Dragon. So, 5000 tardigrades (also called water bears) will be examined for habitation in space. On Earth, these organisms, living in moist soil, fresh and salty water bodies, the watery film of moss and lichen cushions, demonstrate amazing endurance and vitality – they are not killed by extreme temperatures or radiation. Scientists want to isolate the genes of tardigrades that are responsible for adaptation mechanisms.

128 glowing squids will take part in another experiment – on the symbiotic interaction of bacteria with host animals in zero gravity. Also, astronauts will study the effect of microgravity on the formation of kidney stones – it turns out that astronauts are especially susceptible to this pathology. Another experiment will be carried out using Colgate toothpaste to study its effect on oral bacteria.

Up to 8 XE cores and 6 GB of memory

The database of the SiSoftware Sandra test package has fresh data on the upcoming Arc A40 Pro and Arc A50 Pro graphics cards. These are graphics accelerators for workstations that are designed for engineering tasks.

Up to 8 XE cores and 6 GB of memory

The A50 Pro has a full ACM-G11 GPU with 8 Xe cores (128 execution units/1024 FP32 cores), while the A40 Pro is likely to get a stripped-down version of the chip. The clock frequency is 2.45 GHz.

Both cards have 6 GB GDDR6 memory, indicating a 96-bit memory bus. In this regard, both models are similar to the Arc A380 mobile card, which has almost the same configuration.

Thus, the company continues to prepare its entry-level products. When high-performance gaming and professional solutions based on the ACM-G10 GPU will appear, it is not reported. It is also not yet clear whether the Arc A40 Pro and Arc A50 Pro cards will be available in retail or whether they will appear only as part of workstations.

Earlier, Intel introduced its first gaming graphics card for $150.

Apples mixed reality headset will be more powerful than many

Apple’s mixed reality headset should get the M2 single-chip system. Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman thinks so.

Apple's mixed reality headset will be more powerful than many laptops. She will receive SoC Apple M2

Earlier it was said that the headset will receive SoC M1, but apparently Apple has changed the configuration. It is also worth remembering that the current leaks speak of two platforms, and the second will be responsible for processing data from the device’s numerous sensors.

The headset will receive M2 with 16 GB of memory, that is, the performance of the device will be higher than that of many laptops on the market. At the same time, various rumors suggest that Apple has previously encountered the problem of overheating of the headset, so such a powerful platform, apparently, is also a minus.

At the moment, the headset is expected to be introduced in early 2023. It is also likely that for the first time Apple will show it at an event in the fall, but the device will enter the market next year.

Impressive new photo from the Hubble Space Telescope Dive into

The Hubble Space Telescope website has published a new impressive photo. The photograph captures the brilliant globular cluster NGC 6569 in the constellation Sagittarius.

Impressive new photo from the Hubble Space Telescope:

As noted on the website under Image of the Week, the observatory explored the “heart” of the cluster with its Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and Advanced Camera for Surveys, revealing “a brilliant array of stars in this astronomical treasure chest.” The authors of the note poetically invite everyone who wants to carry out “Immersion in the astronomical treasury”.

Globular clusters are stable, closely related clusters containing tens of thousands to millions of stars. The intense gravitational pull of these dense star clusters means that globular clusters are a regular spherical shape with a “populous center” – as seen in the center of this image.

Previously, researchers have avoided globular clusters close to the center of the Milky Way, as dust scattered throughout the center of our galaxy blocks light from these clusters and changes the colors of the stars within them. The latter factor is especially important for astronomers studying stellar evolution, since the colors of stars can give astronomers an idea of their age, composition, and temperature.

Recall that the Hubble Space Telescope is a joint project of the US Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA)
