Sony could release a new PlayStation Portable? And with the ability to play PS5 games

Sony has left the handheld game console market for a long time. The PlayStation Vita came out almost ten years ago, and although its sales were in the millions, it still turned out to be a flop against the backdrop of the PlayStation Portable (PSP).

However, a few years ago, the Nintendo Switch entered the market, and it quickly became clear that the segment of portable consoles could be very promising under certain conditions. Despite the fact that Sony itself does not say anything about a return to this market, many analysts agree that the company is not just thinking about it, but is developing a new product.

concept

Recently, an amusing note appeared on the Web, indicating that the new PSP may not be at all what its predecessors were. The source says that PSP 5G (tentative name) may not be a prefix in its full sense, but a terminal. That is, a device with a 5G modem that will allow you to run games that are processed remotely: either on the owner’s PS5 console, or on the PlayStation Now cloud service.

This approach will make the new PSP very cheap, because in fact the device will consist of a screen, battery, modem and wireless adapters. And with this approach, the novelty should have good autonomy.

At the same time, the console will allow you to play all PlayStation games wherever you have access to the Internet. In addition, you will only need to pay for PS5 games or for the PlayStation Now service. Or Sony will, among other things, create unique games for the PSP 5G – then they may have to be purchased separately.

As a result, the conditional PSP 5G will not be a direct competitor for the Nintendo Switch, but it will be interesting both to many owners of home PlayStation consoles and to those who have long wanted to join the corresponding games, but did not want to spend money on a large console.

It should be understood that this is no longer even a rumor, but a theory. However, she still has one clue, indicating that such a product can actually come out. The fact is that in the official document regarding the Sony x 5G 2019 event, there is a line about the secret Skunk Works PSP 5G project. Of course, there is no description there, but at least the name PSP 5G already allows us to say that the theory described above has a full right to life.
