So who is more popular: Qualcomm or MediaTek? MediaTek leads the market in general, but Qualcomm is much more popular in almost all segments

Counterpoint analysts assessed the Android smartphone platform market in the first quarter of this year.

This time, analysts decided to divide the market into segments in order to assess which of them dominate which platforms.

So who is more popular: Qualcomm or MediaTek?  MediaTek leads the market in general, but Qualcomm is much more popular in almost all segments

For example, in the market as a whole, MediaTek leads with a 44% share, while Qualcomm holds 35%. But in the segment of the most expensive smartphones with a price of $ 900, 73% of the market already belongs to Qualcomm.

As you can see from the chart, all segments from $300 and up are dominated by Qualcomm platforms. Almost everywhere, the company’s share is about 71-73%, but it is worth highlighting a striking exception in the form of the $800-899 segment, where the share of Huawei and Google is much larger than in other segments. Apparently, sales of the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Huawei flagships are affected here.

MediaTek dominates the $100-$299 segments and has parity with Unisoc in the sub-$100 segment. That is, MediaTek owes its dominance to the market as a whole exclusively to affordable smartphones.

Of the rest, as already mentioned, Unisoc’s huge share in the budget segment itself can be noted. For comparison, a year ago in the same segment the share of the company’s platforms was only 20%.

As for Samsung, the share of its Exynos platforms in the premium segment decreased from 34% to 23% in a year.

AMD Senior Vice President Sam Naffziger revealed some details about the RDNA 3 architecture and products based on it. He also touched upon the topic of energy consumption.

We now have a multi-year roadmap with very significant energy efficiency improvements to offset this curve, but the trend is there.

Performance is critical, but even if our designs are more energy efficient, that doesn’t mean we won’t raise power levels if competitors are doing the same. They’ll just have to raise them much higher than us.

Thus, the Radeon RX 7000 line, despite the previously stated 50 percent advantage (over the RX 6000) in power efficiency, will stand out for its high power consumption simply because of the huge performance boost. At the same time, AMD is confident that Nvidia will have to increase power consumption even higher.

For now, the RX 6000 line is more power efficient than the GeForce RTX 30, although the difference isn’t huge. Previously, there were rumors that the top-end RX 7900 XT will consume 450 watts versus 600 watts in the case of the RTX 4090, but so far these are just rumors.
