Snapchat launches its own TikTok competitor called Spotlight

Published

on

Snap is finally ready to compete with TikTok. She has officially announced the launch of a new Snapchat section called Spotlight. It will display vertical video content from users that looks more like a meme and a joke, rather than the everyday content that Snap previously encouraged. Interestingly, the company is ready and will pay creators to publish content on the platform.

To encourage users to post regularly, the company intends to split up to $ 1 million per day among the most popular authors by the end of 2020. This means that if someone can create a particularly viral video, they can make a lot of the $ 1 million total. It doesn’t matter if the author has a large following. The payout is primarily based on unique views compared to other posts for that day. Users can continue to make money from their video if it’s popular for a few days.

Spotlight launches in 11 countries including the US, UK, France, Germany and Australia. Videos in this section can be up to 60 seconds long and should not be watermarked. This means that users cannot simply download their (or someone else’s) viral videos from TikTok and upload them to Snapchat. Anyone can submit a video to the new section. To do this, when posting, you just need to click Spotlight.

The Spotlight section selects posts that the Snapchat algorithm thinks the user might like. The selection takes into account previous views and the duration of views. Spotlight posts will not have a public comment section, and the profiles are private by default.
