Market research firm Strategy Analytics said global wholesale smartphone revenue will grow 2% year-on-year in 2022, driven primarily by a strong 10% increase in the average selling price, offsetting a 7% drop in shipments.

The increase in the average selling price will occur mainly due to top-end smartphones from Apple, Samsung and other brands. Strategy Analytics predicts that from 2024 to 2027, the highest average selling prices will be in South Korea and Japan, and the lowest in Africa and parts of the Asia-Pacific region.

Apple released iPhone 14 series mobile phones in the middle of this month. The average iPhone sales price is expected to reach $892 this quarter and $944 next. In the fourth quarter of last year, the average selling price of an iPhone reached $873.

Growth is expected due to very strong demand for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. Evercore ISI surveyed nearly 4,000 consumers and found that about 56% of consumers interested in buying an iPhone would choose the Pro, up from 41% last year. Evercore ISI predicts that the average iPhone selling price could rise to $940 next year, up 10% from the iPhone 13 cycle.

Apple in trouble iPhone 14 production could fall by 16

According to analysts at the largest Swiss bank UBS, this year the production of the iPhone 14 may be reduced by an impressive 16 million units. This is facilitated by covid restrictions in China, as well as low demand for entry-level models – the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

Initially, analysts believed that the total production of the iPhone 14 this year will be 92 million units, but now it has been reduced to 76 million, which is 20% less than the iPhone 13 was produced last year.

It is important to monitor how the increase in iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max waiting time affects demand,” UBS analysts wrote. “The speed at which Apple and Hon Hai [Foxconn] can solve problems in Zhengzhou, is the key to sales in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023‘, they added.

The iPhone Pro production problems could put further pressure on Apple’s business, analysts say, as the more expensive iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offset low demand for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Ironically, Zhengzhou, where the Foxconn plant that makes the vast majority of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, has been hit hardest by the COVID-19 restrictions. Obviously, such a significant decline in the production of the most popular Apple phones can negatively affect the company’s financial report for the fourth quarter of this year and for the entire year as a whole.
