Smart home equipment makers underutilize multi-billion dollar revenue potential

Despite a decade of double-digit annual growth, the smart home market will remain stuck until it moves on to exploiting its richest resource, data. This is the conclusion reached by experts at the consulting company ABI Research, who believe that the industry is in the earliest stages of using smart home data, which will help offer more valuable goods and services to consumers.

A number of industries that are currently moving beyond the smart home can create valuable data-driven applications and services that smart homes can provide.

“Currently, there are only costly and limited ways to access even some of this data. But there is an emerging awareness that the problem of losing billions of dollars of potential benefit needs to be addressed, ”said Jonathan Collins, director of research at ABI Research.

To make data easier to access, the smart home market must move to support more standardized and simple data exchange between smart home players, both OEMs and service providers. Data is currently used in fragmented ways, typically by the largest providers of smart home platforms to support their own revenue streams from their core business, be it advertising, hardware, or retail.

Smart home players will have to tackle significant challenges, including those related to privacy, so that the growth of most of this market will not begin until mid-decade. At the same time, ABI Research expects that access to smart home data will generate more than $ 2.7 billion annually by 2030.

NASA: You Can Help Teach Rovers To Explore Mars Better

The US Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA has published a note with the intriguing headline “You Can Help Teach NASA Mars Rovers to Explore Mars Better.”

As the department explains, artificial intelligence has tremendous potential to change the way spacecraft study the universe. But since all machine learning algorithms require human training, NASA is asking members of the public to help identify elements of scientific interest in images taken by the Perseverance rover.

The project, called AI4Mars, is a follow-up to a project launched last year based on imagery from the Curiosity rover.

Early contributors to this project mapped out nearly half a million images, using a tool to highlight objects such as sand and rock that NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Mars rover drivers typically look at when planning routes on the Red Planet. The end result was an algorithm called SPOC (Classification of Soil and Object Properties) that could correctly identify these features in almost 98% of cases.

The SPOC algorithm is still in development, and NASA hopes that one day it can be sent to Mars aboard a spacecraft of the future that can do more autonomous driving than Perseverance’s AutoNav technology allows.

AI4Mars now provides additional markers to indicate more precise details, allowing people to choose options such as moving rocks or nodules (globular mineral formations).

The goal is to hone an algorithm that could help a future rover pick “needles out of a haystack” of data sent from Mars.

Equipped with 19 cameras, Perseverance sends tens to hundreds of images to Earth every day for scientists and engineers to view specific geologic features. But time is running out: after these images have traveled millions of kilometers from Mars to Earth, NASA team members have hours to develop the next set of instructions, based on what they see in these images, to send to Perseverance.

GaN fast chargers are expected to surpass 50% in 2025

Apple recently introduced a 140W MagSafe charger for the new MacBook Pro, marking the first time Apple has used gallium nitride (GaN) transistors in a charger. According to TrendForce analysts, this is a sign that fast chargers over 100W have entered a period of growth. This is facilitated by lower prices for power GaN transistors, which are already close to $ 1 apiece. TrendForce expects the share of models with such transistors among fast chargers this year will be 17%, which is almost double last year’s figure, and in 2025 it will exceed 50%.

TrendForce also notes that the peak power of the vast majority of GaN fast chargers in 2020 was in the 55-65W range. More specifically, the 55-65W model accounted for 72% of all GaN fast chargers sales, while the 90W or higher model accounted for only 8% of sales. 140W peak power fast chargers are the most powerful currently available.

Top 10 SSD manufacturers cut shipments by 15% in 2020, according to TrendForce

A little more than two months remain until the end of 2021, and TrendForce experts have just analyzed the situation with the supply of SSD modules in 2020. They concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the supply of these products. Affected by the disruption of production and logistics processes, which began in the second quarter, when governments around the world began to impose restrictions, in their opinion, necessary to combat the pandemic. As a result, the supply of SSDs to the channel (retail sales) amounted to 111.5 million units, which is 15% less than in 2019. As for the market leaders, the top three remained unchanged: Kingston, Adata and Kimtigo.

Analysts clarify that when looking at the overall solid-state drive market, NAND flash vendors, led by Samsung, accounted for about 35% of total shipments in 2020, with solid-state drive module makers accounting for the remaining 65%.
