Seven ex-Samsung employees jailed for stealing and transferring technology to Chinese
A court in South Korea found seven former Samsung employees guilty of illegally obtaining and transferring semiconductor-related technology to Chinese companies. They were given real time.
In South Korea, home to two of the world’s largest manufacturers of memory chips, semiconductors are a vital part of the economy, accounting for roughly 20% of its exports. They are protected as “national core technology” with strict restrictions on technology transfer.
The court ruling, released on Monday, relates to the theft of trade secrets by former employees of SEMES, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics that manufactures equipment used in the semiconductor and display manufacturing process.
The Suwon District Court sentenced a former SEMES employee to four years in prison for illegally obtaining the company’s patented technologies related to its semiconductor cleaning equipment and using those technologies to create similar tools destined for export to China. SEMES was fined $768,000 by the court. Six other former SEMES employees were also found guilty of involvement in the technology theft and sentenced to up to 2.5 years in prison.
“If such crimes are lightly punished, there will be no incentive for companies to devote extended time and resources to technology development,” the court said in the ruling. “It will also lead to competing foreign firms under the guise of hiring talent to easily steal the technology that Korean companies have created with great effort.”
The court said the information obtained by the former employees included drawings of the equipment and a list of related components. They were stolen from 2018 to 2020. Some of the information received was related to technologies subject to South Korean laws protecting “national core technologies.” The court said their actions also violated South Korea’s fair competition and trade secret protection laws.
Based on the stolen information, the attackers created 24 blueprints for semiconductor cleaning equipment and sold 14 machines worth about $59.8 million to competing Chinese firms and a Chinese research institute.

Google has launched a waiting list for access to the Bard chatbot, but so far only in two countries

Google has announced that it is opening up access to its AI-powered chatbot Bard. For now, it will be a limited edition that will be available in the UK and US. Residents of these countries can access the site bard.google.com and add yourself to the waiting list.
The neural network is based on the LaMDA language model, and early tests showed that the system needs to be improved. However, the company is still ready to launch full access to the chatbot.
According to the corporation, Bard works in much the same way as other chatbots. You can formulate requests to it yourself or use hints. However, there are also differences. While the Microsoft Bing chatbot supports citations, Bard doesn’t have source citations to check the accuracy of the answer. Instead, you can see other chatbot response options.
For now, Bard looks like something separate from the Google search engine, but this may change in the future.

“This is probably the most beautiful mobile phone in history.” The creators praise the design of Meizu 20 Pro, which is similar to the Samsung Galaxy S23 and iPhone 14 Pro

Meizu has published the official teaser with the technical parameters of its new flagship Meizu 20 Pro. Right at the very beginning of the indiscreet document, it says: “maybe this is the most beautiful mobile phone in history” …
Everything would be fine, but at the moment the device looks like a collection of quotes: the main camera is designed in the spirit of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and the flat side frame is exactly like the current iPhone. What about the front panel? It looks like almost any other smartphone with a flat screen and an embedded camera.
Among the advantages of the Meizu 20 Pro, the creators name an ideal 50/50 weight distribution (that is, the mass is distributed evenly throughout the phone), a thin screen frame (width is 1.57 mm), a 5000 mAh battery with support for 80 W wired charging and 50W wireless. The thickness of the smartphone is also indicated – it is 7.8 mm.
The Meizu 20 Pro was previously listed on Geekbench with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 single-chip system. There are also examples of photos taken by the main camera of the phone. The official premiere of the Meizu 20 flagships is scheduled for March 30.

Startups use GPT-4 to save on live programmers

Network publications reported that a number of startups began to use the GPT-4 language model from OpenAI to save on developers. AI is said to be capable of generating code.
For example, Landscape startup founder Joe Perkins said on Twitter that he wrote the code for five microservices using a neural network, it took him only 3 hours, and the code turned out to be at a good level. If he wrote everything by hand, he would have to spend several weeks and 5 thousand pounds sterling.
According to Vice, who spoke with Perkins, he studied computer science at school, but his knowledge was only enough to understand the code, and not to write it. So GPT-4 was the right solution. And although Perkins continues to collaborate with developers, the language model simplifies development, speeds it up, and saves money.
But the executive director of online education at the Georgia Institute of Technology David Joyner (David Joyner) said that language models are unlikely to replace programmers. They are more likely to become assistants and take on some of the work.
Thus, GPT-4 is sure to become a sought-after tool in the market soon, and developers will have to learn how to use it in order to be in demand.
