With a focus on gamers on the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PlayStation 4 (PS4) consoles, Seagate has introduced a drive that allows you to expand your game storage space. This is an officially licensed external Game Drive that comes in 2TB and 4TB. PS4 games can be played directly from the drive.
According to the manufacturer, the drive is specially designed and optimized with firmware to work with PS4 and PS5 consoles. Its advantages include a small mass and the ability to use immediately after purchase, without any settings. The USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) port is used for connection and power.
In addition, to celebrate the release of the Game Drive and the upcoming release of Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 and PS4, Seagate has partnered with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Guerrilla to unveil a special variant of the device, the Horizon Forbidden West Limited Edition Game Drive. It is decorated with a thematic image. This drive is available in 2 and 5 GB.
The Seagate Game Drive will start shipping next month at a suggested retail price of $92.49 for the 2TB variant and $139.99 for the 4TB variant. The Horizon Forbidden West Limited Edition Game Drive variant is $99.99 for the 2TB variant and $159.99 for the 5TB variant.
A revolution in the world of handheld Windows consoles. Ayaneo Air Plus on AMD’s latest platform will cost just $290
It looks like AMD has already revolutionized the handheld gaming market, it just takes time.
The other day we were talking about the new Ayn Loki console, which, starting at $500, will be based on Ryzen 6000, which means that in terms of performance it may even be better than Steam Deck. Now we can say that the Valve console is probably no longer the leader in terms of price and performance. At least in absentia.
Ayaneo has unveiled the Air Plus, which will start at just $290! And already for this money, the performance should be quite high.
The console will be based on AMD’s Mendocino APUs, which the company showed at Computex. They combine four processor cores on the Zen 2 architecture and a GPU on the RDNA 2 architecture. That is, this is the same set as the APU in the Steam Deck. AMD itself focuses these processors on cheap laptops, but no one bothers using them to create pocket set-top boxes.
Unfortunately, we do not yet know the details about the GPU configuration of such APUs, so we cannot confidently say that Ayaneo Air Plus will be more productive than Steam Deck, but it is likely that they will be at least on the same level.
True, there is one important nuance. The Air Plus’ six-inch screen will be Full HD, which is a much more significant load on the GPU compared to the Valve console. But at $290, there’s hardly anything to complain about. Suffice it to remember that now these consoles with older processors cost $ 1,000 or more.
It remains to be added that Mendocino APUs will be released in the fourth quarter, so consoles based on them will appear at least at the end of the year.
Will PlayStation have fewer exclusives? Sony plans to release half of its PlayStation Studios games on PC and smartphones
Sony has outlined its immediate plans for the game for PC and mobile platforms.
CEO Jim Ryan said that Sony plans to have half of the games created by its internal studios in fiscal year 2025, including on PC and smartphones.
That is, only 50% of the games will remain exclusive, while the rest will be available to a much larger number of gamers. This is similar to Phil Spencer’s position on the Xbox.
From the chart, you can see that the share of PCs will still be higher than the share of smartphones, which should please gamers who prefer large single-player games. The share of Sony games on smartphones is now about 10%, and in three years it should double. In the case of the PC, there is no exact data, but the share of such projects will not grow so significantly.
Most likely, the big story games for the most part, as now, will be released only on the PlayStation, and will migrate to the PC years later. What kind of games will be released on PC and smartphones? Judging by Ryan’s statement, including game-services. It turns out that Sony is now working on 12 such projects at once. According to the head of PlayStation, if at least some of these projects become successful, it will greatly transform the company’s business structure.
Historically, PlayStation Studios has done an excellent job of building a vast portfolio of single-player games with rich storytelling and beautiful graphics, but we’ve certainly limited ourselves to a fairly narrow section of the gaming market.
By expanding into PCs and mobile devices, and, it must be said, into online services, we have the opportunity to move from a very narrow segment of the overall gaming software market to a presence almost everywhere.
For example, I would say that if we manage to make some of the 12 service games that we develop at PlayStation Studios… if only some of them are commercially successful, then the impact of this will completely transform our business structure over time.
Given the success of Sony games on PC, it’s no surprise that the share of such games will continue to grow. As for the mobile segment, it has long occupied more than half of the entire gaming industry in terms of money. By the way, we recall that the first of the PlayStation 5 exclusives may soon be released on the PC.
Sony unexpectedly marked the “date of death” of the PlayStation 4
Even though the PlayStation 5 sales are nowhere near what Sony would like it to be, the company is very optimistic about the PS5. So optimistic that it revealed the “date of death” of the PlayStation 4, which to this day brings huge profits to Sony (for example, 69% of PlayStation Plus subscribers use PS4).
The PS4’s death date is a bit of a stretch, but it’s a big step nonetheless. And Sony plans to do it in 2025: in three years, the company will stop releasing games for the PS4 – all efforts will be focused on the PS5. Sony has also been very optimistic about PS5 sales, with the company believing the PS5 will outsell the PS4 in 2024. For comparison, about 19.3 million PlayStation 5s have been sold to date against 117.2 million PlayStation 4s.
