Scientists have come up with a way to print parts of rockets directly on Mars – using a 3D printer and Martian dust

The University of Washington has developed technology that may be useful in the exploration of Mars in the future. After all, it is too expensive to transport materials from Earth, so the necessary equipment will have to be produced locally. For this, 3D printing is supposed to be used. Thus, it will be possible to create, for example, parts of rockets.

The material for printing will be ordinary Martian rock dust or regolith. The researchers used a powder 3D printer, for which they prepared an imitation of Martian dust mixed with a titanium alloy. Initially, the materials were laser-heated to over 2000°C to melt them. Then the finished melt could be used to form the desired elements.

It is noted that the best mechanical properties were demonstrated by the mixed material – regolith and titanium. These items are lightweight and durable. Pure regolith was more brittle, although scientists say it could be used to protect against radiation.

According to the authors, this technology will make it possible to reduce the cost of flights and create everything you need literally on the spot. It only takes energy.

Note that similar experiments at the University of Washington were conducted for NASA in 2011. They tested the possibility of using 3D printing to produce parts from the likeness of lunar regolith.

As befits a large review, the authors took a large number of applications for testing. However, if we talk about modern CPUs with a large number of cores, and especially about flagship models, potential buyers should pay attention to those applications that are important for each of them personally.

If we sum up some general results, then everything depends on the specific CPU.

The Ryzen 9 7950X is by far the highest performing non-HEDT consumer processor in the industry. In almost all applications, it shows the best result and somewhere it can lose to some other new product from AMD due to the lack of optimization for a large number of cores. The Ryzen 9 7950X is on average 25% faster than the Ryzen 9 5950X and 15% faster than the Core i9-12900K. However, in some applications, the difference can reach 30-50%.

The 12-core Ryzen 9 7900X is about 6% faster than the Core i9-12900K and 15% faster than the Core i7-12700K. The eight-core Ryzen 7 7700X is 20% faster than its predecessor (Ryzen 7 5800X), while in a number of tasks the new product manages to bypass even the Core i9-12900K, although on average, of course, the latter is faster. As for the popular six-core Ryzen 5 7600X, it is 25% faster than its predecessor and is often able to compete with the Ryzen 9 5900X, which has twice as many cores! On average, the results are certainly not so impressive, but for those who use certain applications, the Ryzen 5 7600X can be almost a miracle.

In games, as always, everything primarily depends on the video card, but in those modes where the influence of the CPU is somehow noticeable, AMD’s new products show themselves perfectly, bypassing even the gaming Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

However, there is also a fly in the ointment. All this huge performance gain was not in vain, and the Ryzen 7000 added a significant amount to power consumption.

Under heavy load, the Ryzen 9 7950X draws around 235W, versus just 118W for the Ryzen 9 5950X. And even the six-core Ryzen 5 7600X consumes 100 watts. True, this is a lot only against the background of the previous generation Ryzen, since the same Core i9-12900K requires more than 250 watts.

At the same time, if we talk about the average consumption in different applications, everything is better here: only 125 W for the Ryzen 9 7950X, which is completely uncritical and still less than the Core i9-12900K.

New AMD processors heat up accordingly. In the same Blender application, the new flagship heats up to 94 degrees, and this is using the powerful Noctua NH-U14S cooler. And the problem is that even the Ryzen 5 7600X heats up to 88 degrees, and the Ryzen 7 7700X does not lag behind the flagship. Again, in games and more gentle programs, the heating is much less: within 70 degrees. And it’s also worth repeating that this is all a lot compared to the Ryzen 5000, because Intel Alder Lake shows no less heat.

Of course, you need to remember that tomorrow Intel will introduce the new Raptor Lake processors, and it is with them that the Ryzen 7000 will compete. which one will compete is not yet clear. And taking into account the preserved technical process, increased frequencies and an increased number of cores, it is likely to heat up and consume new Intel CPUs even more.

It seems that the new generation of Pixel smartphones will differ little from the current models. At a minimum, according to recent data, this will affect the younger Pixel 7 model.

According to insider Yogesh Brar, who at one time provided correct data about the Pixel 6, Pixel 7 will not receive any important differences from its predecessor. It will have the same 8 GB of RAM, the same 128 or 256 GB of flash memory, the same based camera with 50 and 12 MP sensors. The front camera will be new, but it’s an 11-megapixel sensor from the Pixel 6 Pro.

SoC Tensor G2 will also be new, but so far all data indicates that the processor part of this platform will be the same as that of the current Tensor, only with slightly increased frequencies. The screen will retain the resolution and frame rate of 90 Hz, but, unexpectedly, will become a little smaller: 6.3 inches versus 6.4 inches. Apparently, Google heard users and journalists who said that there is not much difference in size between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, and both feel large. True, it is not a fact that reducing the screen will lead to a decrease in size.

As for the battery, its capacity will allegedly be 4700 mAh, which is only slightly more than 4614 mAh for the Pixel 6.

As a result, the situation with the Pixel 7 will be similar to the iPhone 14, when there are very few differences from its predecessor, and there are no serious ones at all.
