Scientists for the first time recorded the most powerful release of energy from the collision of a neutron star with another star

Scientists at Northwestern University and Radboud University in the Netherlands have for the first time recorded light from a fiery explosion caused by the merger of a neutron star with another star.

The team also confirmed that this flare is one of the most powerful short-lived gamma-ray bursts ever observed, leaving behind one of the brightest afterglows on record.

Astrophysicists made the discovery with the Atacama Large Millimeter Wave Array (ALMA), an international observatory operated by the National Science Foundation’s National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). Located in Chile’s high Atacama desert, the ALMA array consists of 66 radio telescopes, making it the largest radio telescope in the world.

This short gamma-ray burst was the first such event we observed with ALMA. It is very difficult to find afterglow for short flashes, so it was impressive to capture this event shining so brightly. After years of observing these flares, this amazing discovery opens up a new area of ​​research as it encourages us to observe more of these flares with ALMA and other telescopes in the future.

The brightest and most energetic explosions in the universe, gamma-ray bursts are capable of emitting more energy in a matter of seconds than our Sun emits in its entire lifetime. In a new study, astrophysicists studied the gamma-ray burst 211106A, which belongs to a subclass of short-lived gamma-ray bursts. Responsible for creating the heaviest elements in the universe, such as platinum and gold, these explosions result from the cataclysmic merger of binary star systems containing at least one neutron star.

After a decade of observing short gamma-ray bursts, it is truly amazing to see the power of using these new technologies to unlock unexpected gifts from the universe. These mergers are excellent sources of gravitational waves, making them major cosmic sources with multiple messengers that can be observed with gravitational waves and light. Although this gamma-ray burst was beyond the reach of modern gravitational wave observatories, we were still able to mobilize several observatories to capture its light in the millimeter, radio and x-ray bands.

The charging parameters are also close. From 0 to 80%, the smartphone charges in 1 hour and 5 minutes, and it takes 2 hours and 31 minutes to fully charge. The flagship of Apple is 1 hour 1 minute and 2 hours 11 minutes, respectively. True, the iPhone 13 Pro Max was eventually rated at 89 points, and the Honor smartphone received only 74 points, which puts it in 40th place in the overall ranking. The reason is that in a number of subtests, the Apple device is a cut above. For example, when playing music, it lasted almost 62 hours versus less than 29 hours for the Honor X7. But in games, the latter is better: 9 hours and 44 minutes versus 8 hours and 52 minutes.

As for the rocket, once launched, the SLS will be the most powerful rocket currently in use. It is capable of launching up to 95 tons of cargo into the reference orbit, and in the future, after modifications, the figure can be increased to 130 tons. It is capable of delivering 27 tons to the moon.

NASA expects that the upcoming launch will attract a huge number of people to the beach near the spaceport. Cocoa Beach city officials estimate that between 100,000 and 200,000 people will come to watch the launch.
