German company Schaeffler has unveiled an innovative electric bike drive system that replaces traditional bike chains with an all-electric drivetrain.
The heart of the Schaeffler Free Drive system is a generator installed in the bicycle carriage. By rotating the pedals, the cyclist drives a generator that converts energy from mechanical to electrical. Electricity is transmitted through a wire to the rear wheel motor, where it is converted back into mechanical energy that propels the bike. The system also includes a battery and control circuitry. The interaction between the nodes is carried out via the CAN bus.
The generator can vary the pedaling resistance depending on the required or selected pedaling effort. If the cyclist pedals faster than necessary, that is, excess energy is generated, it is stored in the battery. There is also a regenerative engine braking function, which also recharges the battery while driving.
The motor power is 250W, which is the limit for electric bicycle motors in Germany.
It is believed that the Free Drive system can be particularly attractive for electric cargo bicycles, especially three or four-wheeled bicycles, where the use of traditional mechanical solutions complicates the design, making it more cumbersome and impractical.
In terms of efficiency, Schaeffler estimates that Free Drive is about 5% less than chain drive.
In less than a year, the situation on the video cards and processors market may improve. The head of AMD spoke about the shortage of chips
AMD CEO Lisa Su expressed her opinion on the duration of the chip shortage. According to her statement, in the first half of 2022, the supply is likely to still be limited.
But already in the second half of next year, the shortage of microcircuits will not be as acute as it is now. How much the situation will change, the head of AMD did not predict, but her vision is still better than that of a number of other specialists who predict improvement only in 2023.
It should be understood that AMD itself does not produce semiconductors, so we are talking about improving the situation in general, which will affect not only AMD, but all other companies as well.
In general, so far most forecasts agree that the situation with the deficit will improve at least in the second half of 2022 or at the beginning of 2023, but no one undertakes to predict when the situation will completely return to normal.
