South Korean giant Samsung recently launched its flagship Galaxy S21 smartphones, and the company may now be gearing up to launch the world’s first OLED laptop that supports 90Hz refresh rate.

This laptop is expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2021. Joo Sun Choi, CEO of Samsung Display, said there are plans to start producing very large batches of 14-inch OLED displays at 90Hz for laptops in early March.

Samsung Display, Samsung’s display subsidiary, believes that consumers will quickly love the new 90Hz OLED displays, which will provide smoother visuals.

The company claims that OLED screens will make gaming and movies on laptops even more comfortable and enjoyable. Samsung also adds that the company’s 90Hz OLEDs are just as fast as 120Hz LCDs.

It is expected that after Samsung, other companies will release their laptops with such screens.

What the new AMD processor is capable of for thin

The network has the first review of a laptop based on the AMD Mendocino processor line.

In this case, we are talking about the recently introduced Acer Aspire 3 A315 and APU Ryzen 3 7320U. Recall that this processor contains four Zen 2 cores with SMT support and a Radeon 610M GPU with 128 stream processors and the RDNA 2 architecture at the core.

Unfortunately, there are few tests so far. In particular, we can evaluate the performance of the processor part only by Cinebench. There is more data from PCMark, but they show about the same picture.

As you can see, in multi-threaded mode, the novelty is approximately at the level of the Core i5-1130G7. The Ryzen 7 4700U is expectedly faster due to the higher number of cores.

Much more interesting is the new iGPU Radeon 610M. It is based on the most advanced RDNA 2 architecture for AMD embedded GPUs, but has only 128 stream processors. For comparison, the Steam Deck has 512 p.p., while the Radeon 680M in the Ryzen 7 6800U already has 768 p.p.

As you can see, a fairly fresh architecture does not compensate for the meager number of computing units. As a result, in 3DMark, the Ryzen 3 7320U loses a lot to all test participants. Unfortunately, there are no solutions with similar performance among them, because even the Ryzen 7 4700U is almost twice as fast.

Thus, the gaming Ryzen 3 7320U cannot be called even with a big stretch. Of course, it is possible to play some old games, but there will be big problems with modern ones. In fact, we even have examples.

As you can see, Forza Horizon 5 can be played at 720p with the lowest graphics settings and active FidelityFX CAS technology. Skyrim works at 60 fps, but at 720p at medium settings and GTA V works in much the same way. That is, you can somehow play, but you have to sacrifice a lot.

It is worth remembering that the same Acer Aspire 3 A315 costs only $ 400, that is, the Ryzen 3 7320U feels very good in this price segment.

Laptop shipments collapsed in October by 40 no demand

According to DigiTimes Research, the cumulative shipments of the five major laptop manufacturers (not including Apple) in October decreased by 13% compared to the previous month and by almost 40% in annual terms. Analysts note that the reduction in demand from ordinary users, enterprises and educational institutions is to blame.

If we talk about the market structure, then Lenovo is the leader in terms of deliveries, although the advantage over HP is small (alas, specific figures are not given). Dell, in third place, is the only company that managed to increase the volume of shipments, but everything is very relative here: plus only because of the comparison with the low base of September, when demand in the corporate sector sank badly.

And most of all in October, Acer and Asus reduced deliveries: each by more than 20% compared to September. But there is nothing to do with enterprises or the educational sector: the deliveries of these two companies sank due to weak consumer demand.

Analysts note that the combined shipments of Taiwan’s top three contract notebook manufacturers fell 13% in October from September. Separately, it is noted that the supply of Quanta, which is responsible for assembling the MacBook, has fallen sharply.
