Samsung unveils industry’s first CXL memory

Samsung Electronics has introduced the industry’s first memory module to support the new Compute Express Link (CXL) high-speed connection standard. The DDR5 memory module is said to enable server systems “to significantly scale memory and bandwidth, accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) and high performance computing (HPC) workloads in data centers.”

The rise of AI and big data is fueling the trend towards heterogeneous computing, where multiple processors work in parallel to process huge amounts of data. CXL is an open, industry-supported PCIe 5.0-based interconnect. The second version of the specification was adopted last November. The CXL’s strengths include low latency in data transfers between the processor and devices such as accelerators, memory buffers, and smart I / O devices, while expanding memory bandwidth far beyond what is possible today.

Unlike conventional DDR-based memory, which has limited memory channels, the Samsung CXL-enabled DDR5 module allows memory to scale to terabytes.

In addition to the CXL, Samsung has included a controller and software development module that will allow the CPU or GPU to recognize CXL-based memory and use it as main memory.

Samsung has partnered with multiple datacenter, server and chipset manufacturers to develop next-generation front-end technologies since the inception of the CXL consortium in 2019. The new module has been successfully tested on next generation Intel server platforms.

The manufacturer does not provide the module parameters.
